7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.5

Woke feeling horrific. Still ill. V tired, but things I HAVE to do at work today. Dragged myself out of bed, and left the house 5 mins later. Nice cool morning, and by the time I am at work with a cup of tea I feel ok-ish.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Cycle commute. Great fun, as ever. A guy comes past me quickly, and I thought he would be off as he looked like a proper cyclist rather than the punters I usually race, but he soon slowed and started looking over his shoulder every 10m or so. Fatal mistake. I have got quite a bad cold and was supposed to be taking it easy, but sometimes it is just too tempting.
1 PM

Trail running 48:36 [3] 6.21 mi (7:50 / mi)

Feeling ok but not running v quickly. In a bit of a huff. I was due to start training properly yesterday, but this cold has reemerged and I am feeling crappy, and LOADS on at work too.

Then again, there are things to be grateful for. The squad has cancelled a weekend at those races in the lakes in November to go to Crewe instead, for a weekend of sports testing. Participants have to pay heftily for the pleasure. There is nothing quite like a bit of sports testing at the end of a rest period to know just how unfit you are. And skipping the 2nd best races in England all year for the inspiring pleasure of Crewe and a treadmill. Its nice not being in the squad and not having the frustration of banging your head against a wall...

Road running 50:00 [3] 5.5 mi (9:05 / mi)
slept:9.0

I had to go to the bank for a meeting, so I ran there on the way home from work. Ray and I arrived dripping in sweat as he ran there too and it was boiling. It's probably not what bank managers 50 years ago would approve of, but as we were not asking for a loan, it didn't really matter.
1 PM

Road running 12:00 [3] 1.4 mi (8:34 / mi)

Home from morningside. I still have the sniffle from last week so was taking it easy.

slept:5.0 (rest day)

There are feats of endurance, then there are kids birthday parties! This sleepover party ended at 11am when we deposited the 6 boys and 2 girls home ("best party ever" apparently. Maybe not for me...). Then we sat on the sofa in shell shock for a lot of the afternoon before heading to the seat where I lay in the sun while others did some other stuff. Not sure what. I was too tired to care. Laurence tucked me in at 8:30pm.

Saturday Sep 26, 2015 #

Note
slept:6.0 (rest day)

Such a tiring one! Lucy had her first sleepover last night. They shared a bed, and woke me up at 4am with their giggling. They were sleeping opposite ends, and having fun kicking each other. So I had to try to persuade them to go back to sleep, and ended up sleeping on the floor. Exhausted in the morning, then took the kids to their first judo grading. V exciting! Belts all around. Then straight to pick up kids for Laurence's camping sleepover party. I packed my running kit, though Ray and I are in sole charge of 7 eight year olds and 3 five year olds, so going running isn't going to happen. If I survive the next 12 hours or so I will be delighted.

12 PM

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:130.2

Cycle home from work. Hmm. Lucy's first sleep over tonight. It's been a bit of an exhausting afternoon already (Friday, schools shut at 12:15 here so I have had 2 x 5 year olds for 4 hours already). Do I open wine now (4:30) with the hope that it will help me through the evening ahead, or do I hold off on the chance that Ray will get home in time for me to go running later? The usual Friday afternoon dilemma...
8 PM

Road running 38:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:27 / mi)

Fun. Nice night. My foot seems to have survived the physio's dry needling last night. Agony at the time, but ok now. I am actually going to do some exercises, as I would like to get training properly. Feeling inspired.

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

12 PM

Road running 1:45:00 [3] 12.5 mi (8:24 / mi)

Run home from work. Work, turnhouse village, cammo, river almond, crammond, prom to star bank inn, up and got lost in trinity as usual, then leith walk, Holyrood, bog and home. Nice. Stopped to admire the view from the col and legs ceased. Felt really good for the first bit, then gradually slowed. I got tired quite quickly, but I have a sniffle so it's hardly surprising.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.5

Walking is indeed tricky, but cycling is do-able.

Got to work to fund the (outsourced) office management company have decided that we are no longer allowed to keep our towels in the shower room, so have confiscated them all. The petty office politics in this place drives me nuts.

Tuesday Sep 22, 2015 #

5 PM

Trail running 1:58:32 [3] 12.12 mi (9:47 / mi)

Blackford hill, Braidburn valley park, allermuir, Carketton and back via braids. Lovely evening for it.

I won't be able to walk tomorrow, but it was probably worth it.

Monday Sep 21, 2015 #

1 PM

Road running 24:08 [3] 2.66 mi (9:04 / mi)
slept:8.0

Staying at Mum and Dad's. This is always a good night's sleep as their house used to be a B&B so the kids sleep in a twin room fitted with a TV!!!

We parked in N Queensferry as Lozza wanted to cycle the forth road bridge. They cycled, I ran. i was hoping to get over the bridge and down to Queensfery but has a refusal from Lucy. Fun, but not really what I would class a run.

Sunday Sep 20, 2015 #

2 PM

Trail running 59:55 [3] 5.78 mi (10:22 / mi)
slept:7.0

From bush up to boghall farm, Carketton, allermuir and back via the Castlelaw carpark. Fun. Foothurty going up the hill.

There was an o kite at the top of allermuir (presumably an army one) and someone had left a bagged dog poo next to it. Nice!

Friday Sep 18, 2015 #

7 PM

Trail running 43:00 [3] 4.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Nice run on Arthur's seat. Foot still pretty intolerable all day every day. If this goes on much longer I might have to try the exercises the physio gave me. Desperate times.

Really steep off roader, that got v slow in the end when I couldn't see a thing and was worried I might take a tumble.

Thursday Sep 17, 2015 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Foot not so bad this morning when I first woke up. Maybe I have reached two days on, one day off as a good strategy.

Wednesday Sep 16, 2015 #

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.0

Still a bit ill. Shivery, tired, headache, but it hasn't developed into a cold - yet.
1 PM

Trail running 48:12 [3] 6.21 mi (7:46 / mi)

Felt quite horrific. First 2 mins was agony, just like the other day, then it eased. It is sore again walking now.

Tuesday Sep 15, 2015 #

9 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.0

No running. I am a bit ill, and after two days of painful walking around, I'll give my pf a break.

Monday Sep 14, 2015 #

12 PM

Road running 1:01:00 [3] 7.5 mi (8:08 / mi)
slept:7.0

Home from work over corstorphine hill. Vile weather. My feet were pretty bad. I am trying to re-introduce orthotics, and I think they will help me in the long run, but in the meantime they are sore. I need to run them in. Apart from that it felt ok. My body seemed to recognise the rythym of running for once.

Sunday Sep 13, 2015 #

Trail running 45:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:8.0

To get the van from colinton where we left it last night at tessa and murray's wedding. What a great day. Really special!

Saturday Sep 12, 2015 #

Trail running 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:6.0

My garmin is playing up, so I can be optimistic and call this 3miles. Up blackford hill, then back via Marchmont.

Friday Sep 11, 2015 #

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:9.0

Physio did some dry needling in the afternoon so afternoon running was out.

London with work. Tired! Interesting to see the results of game theorist's study into popular board games. As my poor siblings will recall, I was pretty much unbeatable at Risk when we were growing up. The key to success in this is an agressive, attacking attitude apparently. Explains a lot.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.5

1 PM

Trail running 37:10 [3] 4.8 mi (7:45 / mi)

Foot v sore for the first 2 mins again. It is getting better in the mornings though, even though I haven't been wearing my night splint at night as trying to sleep with a splint on and scabby knees is too tricky.

Tuesday Sep 8, 2015 #

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Nice and fast / competitive this morning. Loads of bikes on the canal today, but luckily didn't get caught behind any for long.

Lucy asked me why some cyclists take helmets with them, but don't wear them. I have no idea. I see it a lot, and it is usually adults. I find this totally incomprehensible. You either wear one, or you leave it behind.
1 PM

Trail running 41:00 [3] 5.2 mi (7:53 / mi)

Up to the canal and a bit around Heriot Watt. Still felt shocking, but my boy seems to be remembering what running is. My foot was agony for the first half mile, but after that it settled down a bit. Maybe the 20.8 mile leg of the scottish costal relay that I am supposed to be running in less than a month is do-able. Do-able not sensible, obviously!

I saw proper runners today on the canal, for about the first time ever. Lucy Colquhoun and Ian Campbell (not such a proper runner..)

Monday Sep 7, 2015 #

Note
slept:6.5 (rest day)

Too busy with work. Shame. Not feeling too crap from yesterday.

I feel the need to come up with a goal. Hmm.

Orienteering - race 1:14:06 [3] 10.0 mi (7:25 / mi)
slept:9.0

Mmmm, campervan sleep with no Lucy to wake me up.

Nice lie in, drove to the event and made breakfast while Ray ran. We were both running Brown, which was probably a bit unwise with my sore knee. Oh well. I did a bit of riding about with Laurence which I'll call a warm up. Ray got back, having enjoyed himself but saying I'd probably struggle a lot due to my 'current state of fitness'. Thanks!

Jogged to the start, but my pf really did not like the concrete. It was quite happy in the heathery stuff, but not in the hillier, grassier stuff that was 2-5 and 15-18 so there was a LOT of ponceing around here. Felt better after 18 cause I could run again, but then the ground at the last few was too hard for me again. Pleased to have survived - and I beat Ray!

Lovely area. I kept running around thinking how much Jess would love the course - but she wasn't running it. Foot still too f'ed for my usual asphalt I think. Hmm.
4 PM

Cross training 30:00 [3]

And just when I thought my back couldn't creak any more, Laurence and Ray make me go canoeing on loch morlich, and up the river towards Glenmore lodge a bit, which was great fun, but wet!!!

Orienteering - race 54:06 [3] 6.0 mi (9:01 / mi)
slept:6.0

No sleep. So much work to do by this months vat return deadline of Monday night. I managed to work the whole way up the a9 though.

So, I wasn't sure if my pf foot would survive the course, but I set off anyway. Limbered from the start, to discover my back was not used to terrain and was aching. I was going fine to number 1 then got distracted and made a nice big mistake. 2 was fine. I went straight to 3, thought my bearing had taken me way off line but I eventually decided I had been online all alone, and that control next to me was mine. To number 4 I really did get offline. I was all over the place. Comedy how bad I was! The next few were fine until halfway to 9 I wiped out on the bridge and bashed my bursitis knee. Great. I had hit it at slightly different angle than before though, so dispite all the bleeding after walking the rest of the way to 9 I decided I could go on. I picked my way through the green not wanting to do further damage, stuffed number 12 and looked at the wrong code at 23 so dropped some more time here. Otherwise, I was just really slow the whole way around as I felt shockingly unfit.

I realised at the end that I had put my x-talons on as they were less sore on my pf, and that was why I had wiped out on the bridge. The expected grip was not there.

Such humiliation as I realised nick beat me. Oh dear! In my defence, taking out the walking to number 9 might have been enough to beat him. It was interesting trying to race when pathetically unfit. My rampant ego can handle getting beaten by every man and their dog - I'm still riding a wave of post woc euphoria and my bubble hasn't yet burst (will it ever?). It is absolutely no fun running when you are not as fit as you once were. I found myself having to drag my lazy bones everywhere rather than springing up hills. It was no fun. I'll have to find terrain, which my pf seems to like, and get fitter again!
6 PM

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Biking with Lozza in Glenmore. Fun!

Friday Sep 4, 2015 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.5

Not feeling at all nimble this morning. A nice competitive cycle to work is a good way to ease your body into the day.

Thursday Sep 3, 2015 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.5

Feeling good. Nice cool conditions.

I tried running yesterday but had to stop as it was just too painful. I have entered this weekend's orienteering all the same. I'm going to try running again this evening - after Ray gets backfrom open water swimming in the Forth.
12 PM

Cycle commute 41:17 [3] 10.22 mi (4:02 / mi)

EP, Currie, up the hill, Harlaw, Balerno and back. Felt good. Did the hill in 4:57 which I was pleased with, but think I might have had a bit of a tail wind. This is getting to be quite a short route now roadwork diversons have ended. Maybe I need to rep the hill next time.
8 PM

Trail running 51:50 [3] 5.76 mi (9:00 / mi)

Blackford and braids in reverse for a change. I did a round trip to tesco to get bread beforehand and managed to run through the foot pain so it eased up when I had started. The whole of my right leg from the knee down is a bit of a disaster, but not as bad as Graeme.

First run with a reflective vest of the winter.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Tired! I can't blame the kids. Up late reading Unbroken (Laura Hillenbrand). Addictive.

Road running 36:05 [3] 4.52 mi (7:59 / mi)
slept:6.0

No cycle as working from home.

Walk around to Megan's with some crockery, then jog to fran's and home again. Foot was ok, top of fibula less so. I think I am just a total biomechanical write off.
