12 PM

Off-road running 15:00 [3] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:7.0

Warm up / down

XC / road / hill race 31:45 [3] 4.3 mi (7:23 / mi)

Woeful, just woeful. Went backwards in the muddy loop around the grass, then into the narrow ricerside path stuck behind slower moving athletes. Wasted lots of energy trying to get past. Then tired in the second half. Boo. I just can't run on mud. My running technique must totally rely on getting traction.
9 PM

Road running 48:46 [3] 6.15 mi (7:56 / mi)

Punishment miles for being shit earlier. Duddingston, Meadowbank, Waterloo place and home.

Saturday Nov 29, 2014 #

Note
slept:6.5 (rest day)

Christmas shizz. Funny, but still I would have liked to have time for a run.

Friday Nov 28, 2014 #

8 AM

Road running 48:04 [3] 6.3 mi (7:38 / mi)
slept:6.0

Run to work, with James, who dropped by in quite a random fashion. Started after dropping the kids off at breakfast club, then dropped James off at his hotel in the Grassmarket, then on to school. Going well, and feeling fresh, maybe because I started at a good pace with James (just to make him hurt a little...) and kept it going.
5 PM

Road running 1:08:07 [3] 8.41 mi (8:06 / mi)

Run from work along the canal to Fran's. It was a bit spooky along the canal in the dark through Edinburgh's less classy areas (wester hailes). Big hill past Myreside at the end of the run too, so I was tired. Got to Fran's to find Ray and the kids had cycled there, it was dark, the kids were tired, so I ran on home to get the van. Not really what I needed at the end of a high mileage week but my legs felt ok, and seeing both siblings in one day is a nice bonus.

Bad stomach all day and while running.

Tooth problems, so no geeking last night as I drugged myself up and went to bed v early.

Off-road running 48:03 [3] 6.21 mi (7:44 / mi)

7 PM

Orienteering - training 44:00 [3] 4.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Fight with the night. Blackford.

I wouldn't really call my orienteering tonight 'fighting'. More like lumbering around in a vaugely accurate fashion. I was navigating ok, but found the terrain tough going in my xtalons, so didn't touch all the controls, just saw them. Fun, all the same.

Legs a bit crap. Trying to take it easy.
6 PM

Road running 27:41 [3] 3.8 mi (7:17 / mi)

Portobello prom. Nice. Legs felt better.

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Need more sleep, but I was on fire, and crown myself queen of the competitive cycle commute this morning. Little victories (that may cost me in a few hours time when I try to do 10miles hard).
12 PM

Tempo run 1:09:47 [3] 10.0 mi (6:59 / mi)

7:01, 7:13, 6:58, 6:52, 7:01. 35:05
7:01, 7:05, 7:07, 6:58, 6:26. 34:42

Killer. R hip flexor was sore during last few miles. Pushed through it. Got back and cycled home as my half days have been mixed up this week. The cycle helped, tho the pace was probably slower than the run!

12 PM

Off-road running 2:12:42 [3] 14.2 mi (9:21 / mi)
slept:6.8

Glorious run home taking the high road over the pentlands tops then braids. Sunny, lovely. It is great to have some stamina, so when you are at the top of Carketton, 9 miles and a fair bit of climb in, and see roughly where you live and it's 5 miles away, you can look forward to it, instead of dread it.

Calf a bit tight at the end. Physio is back. Appt next Monday.

Orienteering - training 53:35 [3] 5.65 mi (9:29 / mi)
slept:8.0

So after feeling to shit to run XC yesterday, I woke up feeling great today. I was asking Ray whether he thought I had rheumatoid arthritis or Lyme disease. He said he thought I just had hypercondria, but then in the next breath, without a hint of irony he tells me that he thinks he broke his foot in the XC race. You know that bone in the arch? No, I didn't think there was a bone there either. Anyway, exciting news, I get to go orienteering without family. How relaxing!

The hirsel, Coldstream. The art of enjoying orienteering no matter what the terrain is to manage your expectations. I was expecting it to be shit, and actually it was ok, so I throughly enjoyed myself. And RR are such a chatty, friendly club. And it was sunny, and my rested legs felt good. Such fun!

Low points - frying myself on the electric fence 8-9.

High point - the rhodis were great fun, and seeing Stella Lewsley, GB top and all, too scared to run past the highland cow. I can laugh, cause the cow was on the other side of the field when I passed.

I tried and failed to start an email to Jackie last night. I can't be arsed. I might just wait until she comes to her senses and says "hey, woc is in Scotland next year, so why don't we just organise a trip to the world cups in Norway / Sweden, and spend the rest of the time doing tech training in Scotland." I might have a long wait.

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:8.0

Properly cold. Nearly icy. Hard to sleep last night as my legs were throbbing from the reps, but this morning they felt good.

Thursday Nov 20, 2014 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Woke too early...

Afternoon off today so cycled home before lunch, and bonked big time on the way home. That 8 mileflat cycle home was just too taxing!
7 PM

Intervals - long endurance 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Trotter training. Complicated session.

2min then 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 2, 2 with half rep time as recovery. Complicated session where we regrouped after each rep and the aim was to score points by bearing whoever best you in the previous rep. This made it v hard to pace yourself against others as there was a lot of tactical faderisim going on. Felt stronger on the longer reps, and managed not to be Peter G'd, which is not as straightforward as it used to be!

Excellent fun, made even better by approx 25 trotters running round the meadows in the opposite direction as about 40 shitty runners. Crash-tastic.

Knee better throughout the afternoon.

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.0

Insomnia so tired today. Sore knee all night, so put the saddle up on my bike a bit and this helped. I am trying to get a physio appointment to get this checked out, as it has been niggling since the summer.
1 PM

Off-road running 47:27 [3] 6.21 mi (7:38 / mi)

Knee didn't hurt running.

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:8.0

Feeling gah this morning. Ensured sleep with sleeping tablets, but still asleep now.

I had to do some errands in a hurry before getting the kids yesterday, about 10mins after finishing my 2 hour run I did about 20 mins cycling around town, which I think really helped ease off my legs, as they feel better than expected this morning.
12 PM

Tempo run 55:10 [3] 8.0 mi (6:54 / mi)

Legs felt tired, and I was mentally going through the motions at the start, but I got into it later, and the pace picked up. Mud bath. Funny, this is the session I dread most, but in retrospect it is actually quite good fun.

7:31, 7:05, 6:49, 6:48, 28:13
6:44, 6:53, 6:55, 6:22, 26:58

12 PM

XC / road / hill race 27:00 [3] 3.5 mi (7:43 / mi)
slept:7.5

Guessing time. I didn't stop my watch.

I've been inexplicably down all week, so I wasn't going to run this. I was feeling unfit, and in a huff with life generally, and the last thing I wanted to do was an XC race. But due to childcare logistics the these races, you have to run when you can to get enough scoring points for the league. So if I wasn't going to run I'd have to babysit, so I ran, just to get some peace.

It was ok. I went backwards in the muddy bits, and was pulling back when there was stones, roots, anything to give grip. Felt strong. Ended up ahead of Claire G and Megan, behind Eilis and brown Rachel, and Kirsten. Better than last time, so I should really stop being such a moaner!

Off-road running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogging around with Megan and Sandra.

Armchair training 30:00 [0]

Home from work via Braids, which is a really big hill, I discovered!

Orienteering - training 38:15 [3] 4.0 mi (9:34 / mi)

FWTN Braids

Good course planned by Sasha. Fun. Probably as tricky as you can make it without hiding things in the gorse. Only mistakes were getting caught in gorse halfway to 9, and deciding to go straight to 10 as that way looked more fun. Actually it was impossible.

I felt physically and mentally :-(( all day, but this cheered me up a lot.

This week is supposed to be an easy week, which is just as well as it is going pants.

Wednesday Nov 12, 2014 #

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.5

Had another cyclist moaning at me this morning as I was cycling over the aquaduct on the canal. There is a small, health-and-safety type sign requesting that we walk over it, but 95% of cyclists cycle it as it is perfectly safe to do so, and concentrating on cycling stops me looking at the 100ft drop down the side. Anyway, I didn't say anything to him, and got called an 'ignorant twat' which is nice. Is this more antisocial than disobeying a stupid sign? I had to laugh when I saw the lights of the cyclist behind me on the aquaduct also cycling towards the grumpy guy.
4 PM

Road running 42:38 [3] 5.7 mi (7:29 / mi)

Busy day at work so didn't manage to get out at lunchtime. Had a bit of a dilemma about what to do for a run. Ray going out after work, promises he'll be home sober at 8, which usually means 11:30 wasted, so I took no chances and got the run in by running home Ran to Sainsburys, then on to SCOOSH. I felt quite blurgh the whole way (new prescription so to be expected) but was running well, nearly PB pace. Weird. Knee not sore running but seems swollen tonight.

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.5

Slept in to 6:30 again. Couldn't be bothered to stress about it though, and ended up at my desk 5 mins early. Maybe I should chill more.
1 PM

Intervals - long endurance 46:12 [3] 5.83 mi (7:55 / mi)

Feeling totally blurgh for lots of reasons, so was glad to be able to force myself out for 3 x 6mins w 1min and then 2mins jog while I was crossing roads, then 1 x 4 mins.
9 PM

Armchair training 45:00 [0]

Did cf around the jwoc 2014 middle area which was cool. Looked at the Craig a Barnes route choice HP sent around. Had a brief look at woc long 1995 but the image of the map was too grainy to get a good look. The women were really hard done by planning-wise. Crap compared to the men's. The short (middle) was well planned though. I'd like to give that course a go. In fact I was there and ran the spectator races, but only w18 so we didn't get the proper course. I think the w21 spectator races did tho. Nice forests, I seem to remember, and one of the most fun weeks of my life!!!

Monday Nov 10, 2014 #

7 PM

Road running 1:05:03 [3] 7.8 mi (8:20 / mi)
slept:9.0

Slept in massively, so had to drive to work. This sort of mucked up my plans. So Trotter MPC in the evening. A magical, muddy mystery tour with Big D, Ivor, Clemmo, that bloke who's known to me as 'that bloke people think is Ray's brother but isn't Don', and some guy called Simon who had a rucksack for some reason. Just what I wanted. Fun.
9 PM

Armchair training 1:15:00 [0]

Cf then woc long analysis, deciding what routes I would take, what I'd check when etc, then getting the full world of O 'answers' after. It was fun, but still sad not to have run it. I've always had a copy of this race, just been too pissed off to look at it!

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Tired. Its been a tirng week. Ray's been away. Hard training being a single parent don't mix well. It was all worthwhile last night though, as I went up the Seat with the kids, and we lay in the grass under a blanket eating chocolate and watching the fireworks. Nice.
12 PM

Tempo run 1:10:45 [3] 10.0 mi (7:05 / mi)

Blustery wind was coming from all directions. Tight hamstrings, and generally feeling a bit shit, so was going for a negative split, and trying to avoid a PW. Low expectations.

7:32, 7:25, 7:10, 7:16, 7:13 36:36
6:57, 7:05, 7:05, 6:54, 6:04 34:05

Pleased with that. Not far off a PB.

CF and WOC 1993 long. Unfortunately the only WOC long map I could fiind had routes on, which rather spoiled my fun!

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Cold. Not wet. Nice.
12 PM

Off-road running 48:35 [3] 6.21 mi (7:49 / mi)

Achilles v slightly sore. It was v slightly sore before yesterdays reps too though, and is not sore in the morning yet, and I think it is PT rather than achilles so I am not going to change my training plans unless it starts getting worse.

I got chatted up on my run today. Or I thought I was getting chatted up. A student caught me up and was running alongside me. 'You run fast...' he said, which was nice, but then followed it with '... for someone with such big calves. So what sport do you do cause it can't be running?' I should have said kick boxing, and given a demonstration.

My work colleague empathised, as he had been for a MRI to check out a possible hernia. He is 35 and a good amateur footballer. It wasn't a hernia, but the radiographer suggested that at his age he should take a step back from competitive sport otherwise he might get injured again. That's the NHS telling someone of 35 that they are too old for competitve sport. Hilarious.
5 PM

Off-road running 28:10 [3] 3.65 mi (7:43 / mi)

The kids were at swimming, so I took a quick jaunt on the Prom again.

Some fun looking at route choices with Nick. A course in Turkey tonight. I continued for a bit after the skype call ended. I forget how useful and interesting armchair orienteering is. I'm not doing much orienteering just now on purpose (building up brownie points for use at other times, concentrating on running base for a bit, absence makes the heart grow fonder etc etc), so need to get an armchair training program planned to make up for the lack of forest action recently.

XC / road / hill race 31:15 [3] 4.22 mi (7:24 / mi)
slept:6.5

Borders XC league

Dusted down my finest diarrhoea brown singlet for only the 2nd time this year, mainly cause races have been the most dangerous thing for achilles injuries, so I have been avoiding them. I was nervous to see to what extent I could still run an out and out race, and what the damage would be on my body afterwards.

Hard to start fast enough, and was stuck behind punter men who set off too fast and quickly died back to normal pace after half a mile (don't worry Colin eades, I'll not name names) when the path was too narrow to pass easily - irritating. I'll know for next time! It was a proper xc, more like a flattish fell race. Nice gentle reintroduction. Nothing hurt to much during or after (I probably wasn't pushing hard enough!), except my stomach which was pretty bad, but pleasingly no where near as bad as yesterday.

Off-road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Limited w/up/down. Had to hurry back to the burgh.

Ray ran the Glen Ogle 33 today. Start at Killin, follow the rob Roy way to Mhor 84, then to Strathyre via the western back road, then back from Strathyre to Killin on the Rob Roy way. That took him 3:46 (he won) so gave me time to set off on a run from Killin to strathyre, doing the rob Roy way route. Great fun, nice route and I felt a bit less weak than I have done of late but I had such a bad stomach again. Cramps all of the 2nd half.
