Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Nice morning for it. Problems getting to sleep last night, as my legs were throbbing with (happy) tiredness. They felt great this morning though. To run or not to run later? Hmmm.

Orienteering - training 1:27:00 [3] 5.7 mi (15:16 / mi)
slept:8.0

Creag Mhic.practicing running some long legs. The training went well, improving when I decided to focus more. I went up to the higher slopes, which I hadn't been to before and man they were rough. The bracken wasn't a problem, but v tussocky, even fir me. Sensational views - could see for miles. Ben Nevis was looking good. Totally done in at the end. Great area though. Couldn't help smiling.

12 PM

Orienteering - training 45:20 [3] 2.9 mi (15:38 / mi)

Coille Nathais

Middle course training.

I would preferably have had a bigger lunchtime break, but only had childminders for a set time. I was pretty tired when I started this, and the area was rough. Great training though, as it was bushy as hell this time of year - visibility was really low - so you had to be online. Did both ankles a number of times, and was struggling to remain upright when tired, and the going was both marshy and churned. I got lots more confidence in my bearings during this course, and it was a good lesson in navigating when you are knackered. My instinct was to blunder on so I could find somwwhere to lie down, but I made myself focus on navigating properly to the end.

Totally exhausted now. We had a lovely sunny afternoon in Oban with the kids - seafood from the green shack, and ice creams, and I just about felt human again.

Now for a week of juggling tapering, and doing enough to keep sane and feel good.

Orienteering - training 56:14 [3] 3.6 mi (15:37 / mi)
slept:8.0

Airds Park (or whatever it is called).

Map memory. Inc w/up/down. I am so sloppy at map memory, and it took the first 2/3 of the course for me to start really focussing and getting it right. Good in the end. This is the toughest area I have been on in a long time. The going is either severe tussocks or v rucked up from cows, and liberally sprinkled with bracken. Fun nonetheless.

11 AM

Orienteering - training 1:18:21 [3] 6.0 mi (13:04 / mi)

Creag Mhic

Pre running M18 course for JHI's this year. Time includes the warm up and down.

This is another top scottish area. It was excellent. Much better going underfoot than over the road. Good course for practicing my technique. Going back for more tomorrow - yay!

Achilles much better now I have remembered to put my heel lifts in, and taping it to avoid any awkward jolts. Bum was a bit sore at the end. I need to do more squats. Feeling good in the terrain anyway.

And after this training I headed to Oban, for a v peaceful and yummy seafood lunch on the pier, did some map geeking in a cafe, before heading to the marina to reclaim my responsibilities as a parent, and to an afternoon 10Xs more exhausting than my morning.

Note
(rest day)

Achilles niggle. Not the time of year to be trying to run through niggles.

Thursday Jun 26, 2014 #

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

Sore hip / glutes. No big worries I don't think, but it is worthwhile investing a day in calming it down just now.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:5.0

Insomnia. Got lots done, but TIRED now. Bike making worrying creaking noises all the way home. I hope I didn't crack something when I came off last week. In just going to cycle on and get it serviced when I am at woc
12 PM

Road running 36:30 [3] 4.8 mi (7:36 / mi)

I was feeling tired and shitty at work, so didn't think I'd have much energy, but this felt better than I thought it would. Long canal loop. It was supposed to have been slower, but I felt good so went with the flow.

Tuesday Jun 24, 2014 #

7 AM

Road running 50:00 [3] 6.3 mi (7:56 / mi)
slept:7.0

Running commute, which wasn't on the training plan, but its is always cheering to do some road running after a weekend titting around in forests.
12 PM

Road running 45:22 [3] 6.5 mi (6:59 / mi)

Nice hard run home from work. Pb to nursery (39:20, 5.8 miles - never been sub 40 before I don't think) then jogged the rest. The traffic was kind to me at the road crossings which helped. Only had to stop completely about 4-5 times. Tired and happy now.

Monday Jun 23, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

A bad day after a frustrating weekend. In a mega huff. crap day at work too. Quickest fix - slovenliness.

Sunday Jun 22, 2014 #

Orienteering - race 1:26:00 [3] 10.0 mi (8:36 / mi)
slept:7.0

sol4 Lossie. Bad race. Damn.

It didn't start too well. Ray came back late not having enjoyed it, then Laurence wanted to do the yellow. Major faff getting him ready. Pegged it to the start. Got there having forgotten to have a drink, take some jelly babies, strap my ankle, sort out my laces, and the descriptions holder I had was missing its elastic. Great! Ditched the descriptions holder at the start. So I was folding and unfolding the A3 map the whole way, which was a bit of a distraction.

Number 1 was easy. Then going to number 2 the paths made no sense whatsoever. Panic. Where the hell am I? Run around a bit, then I realised there must be some paths not mapped, and the veg must have been mapped really oddly, as I had been right all along. To three the paths were accurate - fine. To 4 another massive extra track just before the control. I assumed this must be the ride. What on earth was going on. Relocated eventually, and realised there was an extra path. Then into the open, where it was just contours, so this was well mapped and my technique was working well. Slow route to 6 and wobble on 13, then back into the forest for another confusing path fest at 14, a really basic control. I had lost all faith in the mapping of paths by now, so I should have just used the contours, but didn't.

Fine then until 19 when I went a bit offline in the green, and ended up in some white forest near a path in the middle of the green. I'd love to have remembered to start my garmin, as I don't have a clue where it was. Nowhere on the map like it. Took a safety bearing east out of the green and relocated. Pissed off by now.

All fine until number 23 when I came out of 22 I ended up in some bracken over my headBearing was tricky. Came out on what I thought was the path on my line, went the right sort of distance, then nothing made sense. I must have been pretty close, but it made so little sense I just gave up and tried to get to a big feature to reclocate. Paths, rides, ridges all blurred into one. 24 fine. 25 30 secs, 26 fine, 27 30 secs, 28 a minute (should have taken the track), 29 30 secs, the rest fine.

A horrid last race before WOC. Next time I am taking a contour only map - I would have been more accurate. Irritated with my inability to learn the lesson at number 2 that the paths were bollocks but the contours were fine.

Frustrating to spend half a training weekend on maps that are not an accurate reflection of the terrain.

Orienteering - training 47:55 [3] 3.88 mi (12:21 / mi)
spiked:12/16c slept:8.0

Beachen wood near Granton. First time there. Tough forest. Steep. Glad to do sub 10min k's. it was 5.3k. After a slow start getting into the map, the second half went really well. The map was not as bad as yesterday's, but still not great.

Road running 16:45 [3] 1.9 mi (8:49 / mi)

Warm up / down.
6 PM

Orienteering - training 52:32 [3] 4.0 mi (13:08 / mi)
spiked:11/11c

Docharn and deishar.

Great memories of many training sessions in this forest, but I haven't been here for ages. It is so so good! It deserves the hype. It couldn't be better - just perfect - neither could the map. I wasn't going to do a second session today as I wanted to be fresh for tomorrow but I am so glad I did, as I spiked the lot,and the technique I am working on didn't work at all with yesterday's dodgy map, and was ok in the morning, but was perfect this afternoon. Great confidence for woc. Such a shame it's not being used for woc long 2015.

Went over on left ankle. Damn. I was jogging to the start when I remembered that I had meant to tape my ankles. Feels ok now - no major damage.

Revack. Not on fire. Tough forest directly after a 3 hour drive. Map was not talking my language.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Our electric wieghing scales broke ages ago. They seemed to start working again the other day when the kids were playing with them. Glad that I haven't accidentally put on 10kg in the last couple of months.
7 PM

Hills 40:00 [3] 4.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Trotter training.

Hill reps - my first for ages.

Castro climb (grass). 30secs, 60, 90 x 3 with a 60 on the end. A short session but long enough for me - I was feeling great and pushing hard, but my legs were killing on the last rep. Well paced. Achilles felt fine, and calf only slightly tight, so excellent.

No warm down after as I walked back to the meadows with Maggie and she's can't run just now. HBT beer on the meadows (I didn't partake) watching Shitty training, then jogged home. Found out what the Uruguay flag looks like on the way home. Those people will be voting Yes in September then...

First mile uphill, last downhill

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:8.0

I was really tired yesterday, so I went to bed at 8:30. This was just as well as Lucy woke up at 9:30, 11:30 and 1:30, in some sort of pain. it took ages to get her back to sleep each time, and I ended up on her floor. Feel ok this morning. Apart from coming off my bike. The most annoying people on the canal towpath are the people that run along with ipods, totally oblivious to others. So they don't hear you ringing your bell, and this woman decided to change sides of the path just as I was overtaking. I brake and end up slamming into some railings. She was very apologetic, but that doesn't really make much difference when you have bleeding knees and a bruised arm. Nice morning for it though. The cycle I mean, not coming off the bike.
12 PM

Intervals - long endurance 41:30 [3] 5.3 mi (7:50 / mi)

6 x 3min w 45 secs. Started slowly, but by the end I was up to normal speed. It was scorching in Edinburgh today. One of my colleagues had came back from lunch with team ice lollies. I could have wept with gratitude.

Off-road running 1:57:21 [3] 13.07 mi (8:59 / mi)
slept:6.5

run home from work. Same as last Tuesday. I had bad stomach cramps.

Sunday Jun 15, 2014 #

Note

This has been a nice week off orienteering. I have done nothing whatsoever to do with orienteering. No geeking, no catching features, no planning and certainly no running in a forest with a map. Its been good. Kept me hungry for orienteering.

The niggles are still niggling, but as under control as they have been since Feb last year. I'm physically ready for the last two weeks of hard training before WOC, keen to get back in the forest for the next two weekends.
2 PM

Road running 34:32 [3] 4.6 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:8.0

Ray was off running, Fran's away as are mum and dad, so today's running was laps of the meadows with Laurence on his bike when Lucy was at a party. Worked well except he wanted me to go at 6min miling the whole way. Not going to happen.

Saturday Jun 14, 2014 #

6 AM

Off-road running 56:41 [3] 6.36 mi (8:55 / mi)
slept:7.0

A run at 6:30 on Saturday morning - only Sula drags me out that early. The problem with sula is that she only has one pace - fast. Round the whole outside of Holyrood park clockwise, in mud the whole way, then up the crags and back on the path above the bog path. Good. Chatty. Did a bit of 7 min miling, chatting away still on the asphalt after dunsapie to drop a bloke who had joined in off the seat, and clearly thought he should be overtaking us. He dropped back after a couple of minutes, much to our amusement. Seriously though, sula is nuts running this quick this early.
12 PM

Off-road running 51:19 [3] 5.76 mi (8:55 / mi)

The kids got up way too early today, so were in foul moods by lunchtime. I nipped out before Ray headed to Moray.

Blackford hill, braids and back via golf course, fields and Cameron toll. Brown crop top weather, which was just as well as all I had in the kit drawer was a brown crop top and some riduculously short scottish athletic shorts.

Friday Jun 13, 2014 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Nice level of leg stiffness from last night meant I was going well and feeling good this morning.

No black rock for me as my babysitter (Fran, Mum & Dad) are out of town. Achilles wouldn't like it either. This week is turning into an enforced easy one - Ray is away Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Never mind. After this two hard weeks, then an easy one before WOC.

Thursday Jun 12, 2014 #

8 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Feeling slightly more human today. I think maybe Sunday took more out of me than I thought. It was one of those races where I felt dire from about 20mins in, and the rest of it was about getting across the finishing line. Not sure if it was the heat, or a virus or whatever. So exhausted at the end, which is surprising for a 90min race at a slow pace. I have been training well recently on the longer runs.
7 PM

Intervals - long endurance 55:00 [3] 6.5 mi (8:28 / mi)

How exciting! Trotter training for the first time in over 18months! It was v embarassing. Lots of random people asking if I was new.

Boglauf, which effectively is 6x3mim with 3 min rec on a muddy, grassy, boggy, gravelly relatively flat path around hunters bog on Arthur's seat. I felt shite beforehand - tired, crap legs, achilles and ankle and knee niggles etc - but great during. Dodged the blue blazer to maximise sleep. Next week maybe...

Wednesday Jun 11, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

So tired. I set off for a run from work, mainly for stress relief purposes, but decided that I was too tired, so found a nice shady patch of grass and did some relaxation. Nice. But childcare means that I won't get running much this week, and probably not tonight. Boo.
7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:6.5

So tired and grumpy. Ray came away from the GP with two carrier bags of creams for Lucy yesterday, so an unbroken nights sleep might not be too far off. Maybe.

Tuesday Jun 10, 2014 #

8 AM

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:8.5

Bed at 9:30, still wake up exhausted. Tired.

Logistical fail this morning. Grr. Running home from work over the Pentlands. The logistics required to drop the kids off then get to work by 9 if I am not running or cycling are complex, and I have failed totally this morning. Shit happens...
5 PM

Off-road running 1:55:00 [3] 13.0 mi (8:51 / mi)

Same as last Monday. I stopped my garmin crossing a road and forgot to restart it, but the run lasted roughly the same amount of pet shop boys discography album as last week (once through completely and to Being Boring second time round). I was exhausted today, and was considering just getting the bus home to go to sleep, but the run was nice and I felt pretty good, running up braids today. Need to make sure I don't get too exhausted though.

Monday Jun 9, 2014 #

7 AM

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Ray actually asked me this morning if I was running to work. Hahahaha! Everything hurts. Knee whack, shin whack, ankle scraped as it got stuck in a rocky hole, that's on top of the usual cuts, bruises, aches and pains.

Frustrated by yesterday's race. Didn't follow the plan at all. Let myself get distracted by others time and again. I've got to learn to trust in myself. When I am orienteering alone it is perfect. When I see others it goes to peices.
2 PM

Off-road running 28:27 [3] 3.25 mi (8:45 / mi)

Recovery run. Pollock, bog, Castro and back via school to get Laurence. The pace was probably a bit too swift due to me underestimating how long it takes to run 3 miles off road when it is a bit hilly, v muddy in not at all grippy trainers. Very wet, a lot of fun, and not painful.

Sunday Jun 8, 2014 #

2 PM

Orienteering - race 1:31:00 [3] 9.0 mi (10:07 / mi)
slept:8.0

Worldcup long Norway.

Bad. Really bad. Which is why I was just annoyed to have been disqualified for not punching the drinks control, rather than gutted.

1 - 2.5 mins, 4 - 30 secs. 5 - 1min plus, 6 - 30secs, 9 - 30 secs. 10 - 4 mins plus. 11 - ok but no confidence in my route. 12, navigated into the circle, knew where I was but still fucked it. Too tired, demoralised and thoroughly dehydrated by now. 2mins? 13 ok, 14 ok, 15 30 secs couldn't see it, 16 - 30 secs. Not focused enough to think at the start, too tired and dehydrated to think at the end. Annoying. When I wear my usual brain it is easy.

The GPS will be on the Internet somewhere too I imagine. Too gruesome for me to look at!

8 AM

Off-road running 18:00 [3] 2.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
slept:9.0

Jog with cat and Hollie. Nice.
2 PM

Orienteering - race 38:44 [3] 4.6 mi (8:25 / mi)

World Cup middle - Norway.

I was confident and happy at the start. Felt ok, not great not dire.

Start to 1 around and up the reentrant. I maybe dropped too low to get around the crags. 15 secs 1-2 up the reentrant, boulder, up the other reentrant, then bearing, ride, boulder, hill and in. Good. 3 couldn't decide whether to go for the path. Went that way, didn't see it, wiggled back. Banana. 15secs.

3-4 bearing. Marsh, round the hill. Good.
4-5 straight, above the tags, down the Spur and in. Stopped too soon.15secs. Ok. 5-6 other side of the rocky spur, open marsh and down the ditch. Not a great descent. Nailed the route chosen, big the route wasn't great.

6-7 down, open marsh, across. Marsh was slow. Should have stayed a bit left for longer. Ok.
7-8 plan compass, left of marsh, in off the reent. Compass. Hit track online but the terrain looked rough. Round the track and in, but came off the marsh at the reent going south by accident, corrected but didn't know if I was too high or not. 50secs. Bummer!

8-9 bearing to stream, then spot hill, with the crag and the reentrant and bearing from there. Good.
9-10. Bearing. Good.
10-11 bearing, stream, house track hill, marsh and in. Good.

11-12 bearing, reentrant and in. Good.
12-13 racing with others, getting distracted. All over the place. Oh how ugly.... 1 min. Bad. Bad. Bad.
13-14 bearing, behind hill.
14-15. Ride to the open, then track. Should have cut the corner a bit. Nailed my route but could have been braver!

So ok, but annoying mistakes. Better using Nicks method than mine, and more confident too. Thanks!

Looking forward to tomorrow!

Intervals - long endurance 41:18 [3] 5.46 mi (7:34 / mi)

6x3mins w 45secs on the canal. Felt good and strong. Got much further than the last few times I did this session too. Really pleased.

Noce and wet, which was refreshing, until I realised that someone had beaten me to the shower, and I had to stand in reception at work caked in mud, sweat and rain, with my white top totally see through, for 10mins. Great.

Cycle commute 1:00:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:7.8

Good sleep last night. Used 'Kalms' in trying out the herbal alternative to temazepan, I got to sleep pretty well on it, but felt crappy in the morning (tired, nauseous) and struggled to function when I had to get up in the night with Lucy.

Cycle to work was hilarously competitive. There was about 5 of us, together in the end. I was having a nice little chuckle to myself, but I think the others were taking it more seriously...

Road running 26:27 [3] 3.26 mi (8:07 / mi)

Lunctime jog. Legs feeling crap.

Off-road running 1:55:30 [3] 13.02 mi (8:52 / mi)
slept:6.0

Run home over the pentlands. I was running up the hill I had done bike reps on last week when I I remembered I wa going to go back to andrew murray's advice and stick to flat running. Not really suited to my plan. So I got out of the woods on the path and went left through some flattish tussocks for a bit (surprisingly fun) then picked my way to dreg, then SwSwanston and Hillend on paths, then Fairmilehead and back via braids and the fields. Nice. Calf cramping. Achilles much better on the flatter stuff. Walked the short sharp hill bit to the braids trig as by that stage I knew it would be disastrous to try to run a steep hill with v stiff calves and tired, niggley Achilles.

Note
(rest day)

Day off, apart from some glutes stuff. Had two high caffeine clif shots on the way around yesterday. I was still buzzing at midnight. I am trying out sleeping medication before woc though, so I took some temazepan, and slept like a baby until 7 when Lucy woke me. It's magic stuff - shame it is not a long term solution (highly addictive and your body becomes immune to its effects after a while).
