6 PM

Orienteering - race 1:05:59 [3] 8.8 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:6.0

Coughing all night and lungs bad now. Back to drs on Monday I think. Decided cruising pace would be the best option, esp with the nav, so ran slowly and smoothly except for the end where I lost concentration a bit. 3 mins lost at 7, 1 min at 12 and bits on all of the last few. Lungs pretty bad. Hmm. Enjoyed it though - more than the guy I heard shouting an almighty 'for fuck's sake!' at what must have been the start of his course. 10/10 for passion!

Road running 40:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:53 / mi)

Only chance I think I'll get today. Fun. Nice sunrise. Windy.

Note

Seemed to have develop a bad cough over the past 24hours. Damn.
1 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 40:00 [3] 4.85 mi (8:15 / mi)
slept:7.0

Reps from work. 20 x 1min w 30secs. Felt good, I think.

I had a very funny morning run to Megan's to pick up the van this morning. Lucy decided she was going to come on the run with me. It is not much more than half a mile. She got her trainers on, her RTC t shirt etc. Great chat 'You go behind Mummy, as I am faster than you' etc. When she got tired she said 'I'm going to jog for a bit Mummy as if you do lots of jogging it makes you run faster'. Odd logic. Might have to do this again sometime.

It was a late night last night baking for trotettes which I am co-hosting tonight. Trying to separate egg yolks from egg whites at 11pm was particularly trying, and as a result we had 12 egg whites in the fridge this morning. I decided to make egg white scrambled eggs this morning, which is the sort of thing that's supposed to be really good for sportmen (high protein, low fat). It was really weird. We have scrabmled eggs most weekends, and having totally white scrambled eggs was quite hard to get your head around. Once we'd got past that it was ok though, and didn't taste too bad. I'd do it again. Ray tells me he'd sooner have meringues for breakfast. Next time...
7 PM

Road running 45:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:11 / mi)

Massively fun trotettes run - chatting all the way with Rachel.

Tempo run 27:30 [3] 4.0 mi (6:53 / mi)
slept:8.0

Itenburgh girls tonight was Rachel Mrs Haines and Megan M. Rachel wanted to do 8miles at 6:30/miling. I knew this would be a big ask as I had tight calves from yesterday and 6:30 miling for a hilly loop is quick for me so I stuck in for 4 miles then jogged the rest. Great training. Real motivation to get fitter so it doesn't hurt so much next time.

P.S. Sorry Tessa, this must be driving you nuts...

Road running 28:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:20 / mi)

Jogging about before and after.

Still feeling a bit washed out from the recent illness and Laurence is not sleeping well at all so a bit of a change in emphasis this week to get some energy back. Quality training, and making life as easy as possible the rest of the time. I am not even trying to cycle commute this week - too unpredictable with the ice makes it stressful, and the arctic blast induces such a chill it is more physically draining than usual. Driving to work instead. Short sharp sessions. No excess miles. Trying to maximise my sitting down time.
1 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 1:12:00 [3] 9.3 mi (7:45 / mi)

Jog to the seat, then Duddingston, Joppa, along the prom, and back via restalrig and Castro, doing fartlek of 2mins on 30secs off (fast / slow as opposed to v fast / stop). 8 miles took me to Holyrood, and I jogged back from there. Really tough coming back from the coast into a v strong and icy headwind.

9 AM

Off-road running 1:27:48 [3] 9.05 mi (9:42 / mi)
slept:7.0

Half on road, half off. Blackford hill, braids, then the fields and Cameron toll, craig miller, Duddingston village and top of the seat and home.

I was feeling pretty smug about skiving the national XC when the blizzard started. Then I got home and Ray had told the kids I was taking them swimming. Thanks!!!

Warm up down.

Orienteering - training 57:37 [3] 7.3 mi (7:54 / mi)

Pre running bucs. Devilla. Women's course. Fun. Enjoyed it. Devilla demons exorcised. Few dodgy bearings (2) some crap thinking (5), some areas where being early start was tough (to 8 and maybe 9) but that is minor - does devilla ever speed up! Just didn't see 14 in the tussocks. Ok run, got what I wanted out of it. An aggressive, up for it student could go sub 55. I think it will be Zoe, Jo or Charlotte.

Charlotte in 55:56. Good guessing by me!

Jog to Barra and round the lighthouse and back along the beach. Running on sand is not something I am going to miss!

4 PM

Off-road running 20:51 [3] 2.4 mi (8:41 / mi)
slept:8.0

Run to get the car back along the beach. Half on sand, half on duckboards. The sand was tiring!
5 PM

Orienteering - training 8:03 [3] 0.91 mi (8:51 / mi)

Loop one of the no paths course from the model start. Going nicely, even in the green.

Orienteering - training 22:24 [3] 1.83 mi (12:14 / mi)

Loop 2. Wasted time looking for a tape at 1. There was none.

Orienteering - training 22:10 [3] 2.13 mi (10:24 / mi)

Loop 3. Fun fun fun!

10 AM

Orienteering - training 1:24:00 [3] 11.0 mi (7:38 / mi)
slept:4.0

Not much sleep at all. Something slapping around in the wind outside.

Pom day 4, in the mass start for w21e as I didn't run today. The plan was to run race pace for about 45 mins then stop, which I did. I was going well up to10, (I seemed to ditch the pack by going straight to 2) then stuffed a few and the pack caught me, which seemed a suitable place to jack. Went back to my stuff for a drink, and decided to take I'm the last lap.

Felt lots better today. My legs had energy, still coughing though. Felt much more positive today even though I didn't do the whole course.

Monday Feb 16, 2015 #

11 AM

Orienteering - training 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:7.5

Training exercise. Corridors. Not very successful.

I was going to run today, but Nick made me see sense. Running again when ill is not good. Still, it's the sort of thing that really, really gets to me. But that's for loads of ridiculous reasons, and I am trying to be sensible, so sensible over rides ridiculous.

Sunday Feb 15, 2015 #

10 AM

Orienteering - race 39:13 [3] 6.0 mi (6:32 / mi)
slept:7.0

Woke up in the night for 3 hours. Stressing. Wrote some stuff down to destress and got back to sleep.

Today I was terrible again. I tried. Some mistakes early on but I couldn't have gone much more than 2 mins quicker. Inexplicably shite. Lots of things could be wrong just now, but listing them is just making excuses for myself, and I don't need to do that - I could just be really unfit and shite - who knows. I need to concentrate on improving in the future though. I need to think about how to do that.

Orienteering - race 1:20:07 [3] 12.1 mi (6:37 / mi)
slept:8.0

Pom long day one. Felt tired, v tired. Mistakes at 3, 4, 6, 7, and 10, and hesitancies at 2, 12, 15, 16. Overall :-( but not a total Devilla experience so I'll do tomorrow

10 AM

Orienteering - training 35:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Model training. Coughing up lots of crap. Going pretty well navigationally at this slow pace.
2 PM

Orienteering - race 17:30 [3] 2.5 mi (7:00 / mi)

POM sprint relay.

first leg. Not feeling fresh at all. Took some bad route choices, and where I took my own choices, I was too hesitant to pull them off well. Big mistake one after the spectator. Took my own route, which was going well then slipped, cut my knees up, lost focus and thought I couldn't get through even though I knew I could from my planning, so doubled back. Big mistake. I just needed to look 5m left and I was through. Tried to keep fighting but lost heart a bit after that.

Not feeling good, or looking forward to tomorrow. For some reason I am pressurising myself to get good results which is nuts after so much time off, and with a lingering illness. This coupled with the kids waking us up at 6:15 and then being hard work all day means I am in a bit of a boo. I feel a Devilla experience coming on tomorrow... Need to get my head straight quickly.

Another day off running and work, but feeling noticeably better today. The dentist looked at the sinusitis and said they were both linked, and the root canal treatment should be postponed until the sinusitis has gone to see if it settles down. Feeling v unfit and fat and keen to get back to it!

Some Portugal stuff.
1 PM

Road running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
slept:6.0 (sick)

Not much sleep last night. Was going to try a running commute, but after setting off I felt terrible (still have my sinus headache and feeling a bit feverish too) so I diverted to a bus stop. I am pretty sure I have sinusitis now. Feel dreadful. Hmmm. Do I go to the gp and maybe some antibiotics incase it doesn't clear up in Portugal, or not? I am hoping that a few days off running and I'll be fine by Thursday. At least I have managed to get an emergency dentist appointment for tomorrow. I've just found out my most useful bit of training equipment (the van) needs £1,000 spend to get it through the mot too. Ouch! February really hasn't been a very successful month so far! Onwards and upwards with a smile on my face!

Oh dear. Sinus headache / migraine thingy all day, now I've got toothache so bad I can't sleep, and we have POM flights on Thursday. Hmm. This is shit! I can run through body pain, but not sinus pain, and I can't sleep through tooth pain. Annoying.

Orienteering - training 40:00 [3] 4.1 mi (9:45 / mi)
slept:8.0

I am feeling a bit less achey. Sore sinuses giving me a headache tho. I was in town with the family, so at the end of the trip left them at potterrow and jogged to st giles's, did the men's RTC sprint course until I came to a locked gate, couldn't be bothered with the long diversion as I was tiring, and jogged home. Coughing up loads of gunk - all over the tourists! Hopefully after another day playing at training tomorrow I'll be able back on the plan on Monday.

Catching features. Trying to do fast / easy. Then got cocky. Then got lost!

slept:9.5 (sick)

Ray's back from London, allowing me to get a lie in for once. I feel quite a bit better today. Still off work ill officially, but some statutory deadlines mean a little working from home is unavoidable today. My normal rule is if you are too ill to work you are too ill to train, and vice versa, but if I have to work today, I might be allowed to go for a jog if I feel up to it later...
6 PM

Armchair training 25:00 [0]

Got a shit cold. Day off work means I get loads of those niggly things on my to do list (insurance, utilities, saving accounts, pension) ticked off which is nice. Maybe tomorrow, if I am off again, I might get everything done leaving me free to get better.
5 PM

Armchair training 30:00 [0]

Geeking done Portuguese maps that nick sent me. They looked more interesting than I expected, so I am looking forward to POM now.

Armchair training 40:00 [0]

Catching features and geeking cold ash brown course. Makes me glad I don't live in the south east. It's a bit like yesterday's orienteering, but in a bigger forest. I was bored geeking it - running it must have been very tiresome. Another bearing, through some more green/brambles to another ditch junction...

Orienteering - race 37:41 [3] 4.35 mi (8:40 / mi) +43m 8:24 / mi
slept:8.0

Blue, Dalkeith country park. This was really quite a dull blue course, but the area was dull too. Good to have a map of it for bearing practice etc in the future. I dropped 30 secs at 10, and that was about it. Others would have gained on me on the xc race that was the last couple of k.

Think I am getting ill.
