MNOC AR Tune Up
Did the AR Tune Up but didn't finish. In the procesd I got an education and got humbled a bit. The race srmtarted with a short, 3 point orienteering effort. That went well and I feel like I stayed in the pack.
On bikes I wad towards the rear of the pack as we set out. I still don't trust my navigation instincts so I spend a lot of time checking and rechecking my maps. People pass me as I do this. As it turns out it was a good thing I did because my route was a little hidden and I wasted 15 or so minutes looking for the trail.
I got to the next orienteering section and feel I handled it pretty well. More biking then orienteer. At this point I was in last. Two things account for that, poor bike navigation and double-checking my route too much, too often.
As last at the kayaks I had to wait for some boats to come back theis burned a bunch of time. The other team waiting and I were told not to do the srcond half of the kayaking. So I went out and got ny one point. Rowing one of the things solo is a real challenge. I floundered a lot until I saw another guy solo who was up on his knees. Boy did that mske a difference.
After kayaking it was a quick ride down to the next bit of orienteering. The map was an areal photo with almost no noteworthy features. Then I figured out what riad signs looked like on the map. I used those and wad able to hit a bunch of point reslly fast. I made up dome time here.
Bike back to the start snd ther was a 15 or 20 point orienteering course waiting for me. I got about 6 points when my brain lost the arguement with my body and I headed in. I had 30 minutes left so I ciyld have grabbed 2 or 3 more pojnt but exhaustion and blisters where catching up to me.
I checked in, ate some food, talked to Erin and race organizer - Mike.
I learned a lot. Got humbled. I think I'll oark adventure racing for the year be keep hammering away on orienteering. I'n going to take sone classes on kayaking, keep improving me aerobics and navigation and try again next year.
