UMD campus score-o. wasn't sure whether to do this or just go run in the forest, but I figured it might be good to get on a campus map ahead of the team trials sprint. did the short (45 min limit) due to still being slightly sick and my arch acting up a little. got 33/45 controls with a few seconds to spare. not much time for strategy, I started out just trying to get them all, going in sections separated by major campus roads. bonus points for a nice face-plant into some grass (luckily a soft landing) after tripping on a curb, with students watching. L big toe hurts a bit after that.
The short one was probably a bad choice since it actually had different controls than the long, and they were really close together, which would have been fine, except that the event used multiple choice trivia in lieu of markers+punching (e.g. "what is the date on this statue?"). that is fine too (we've done a few CSU events like this) except except in combination with close controls. Since some of the things were slightly tricky to find, I probably ended up spending relatively more time searching or dealing with the clue sheet than I actually spent running or navigating. I think it would have helped to have more distance between controls, or use all the same type of feature (e.g. emergency call boxes).
ouch. enough of a headache (despite tylenol) that I had to come home from work. probably a sinus infection from traveling while so congested. on antibiotics.
