L Foot, Impact wound / trauma

2008-09-02 – 2008-10-02

Grade: 3

Went out on the boat yesterday, figuring it was a gorgeous day, it's getting late in the boating season, and Cheryl and I both had the afternoon off. Cruised around a bit, then anchored off of the outlet on the Webster side, in the lake. Contacted Anne who joined us, by wading out to the boat. The mistake was heading into deep water, at Anne's request, as she likes to dive off the boat. She tried a dive off of the side of the boat, to have a little more height, rather than the platform at the back of the boat with is a more stable surface, but is very low to the water. Her dive went OK, but I decided that I had to try to copy her. When I tried it, my feet slipped as I was pushing off, and my left foot was injured, in two ways, it appears. I sustained a nasty cut in the inside center area of the foot, right at the arch, and I think I also got some sort of orthopedic injury as well, more on the outside of the arch. Not sure if it's a sprain, or a minor break, or what, but it hurts like anything to put any weight on it.

I'm guessing that this will put me out of running for at least a number of days, which puts my planned marathon on Sept. 14 in jeopardy. But I haven't paid my entry fee yet so it's no real big deal if I miss the marathon. I'm more worried about being out of action for long enough to significantly lose fitness. Hopefully the recovery will be faster than I'm expecting, but right now, even a block would be tough to do.

Don't jump off of a motorboat where it isn't intended for jumping (i.e., the slick, unstable side of it, with protruding metal parts to cut the bottom of feet).
