Actually, the peak discomfort is pretty severe, and it's hard to concentrate at that point, but it doesn't get any better with rest or any worse with exercise, so it really hasn't interefered too much in that regard - hasn't interfered with sleep much, either - at least, not yet. Fotunately, ibuprofen and Tylenol both mitigate the pain immensely, so I've been interleaving them. When they wear off, though, the pain is quite discomforting.

Started as pain on the lower part of my right ribs and also in my back. Considered that it might be shingles, but also thought it could be due to a fall (gentle as it was) I took at Bayfront. By Wednesday Sept 1, the rib pain had moved to my upper abdomen, and I was concerned that it might be my gall bladder or liver, so went to the doc. She found a knot in the muscle in my back, so thought the pain in the abdomen was just referred pain. But as the next week wore on, and I saw how sensitive my skin was in a band from from to back, going around under my right arm, I was pretty convinced it was shingles. By the following Monday, the rash started coming out, so went to see the doc on Wednesday, Sept 8. Started the antiviral that evening.

The antiviral really kept the shingles from getting bad. Was mostly just annoying.
