Race Evaluation

Hillbilly Goat: Billygoat Gruff

randy

1. Ran too fast
+01:30
Got in the lead pack with Ross and we all missed. Bailed to the trail
2. Trail and cut in. Had to queue to punch and lost leaders
3. Straight at it thru the clearing then keep eye on veg boundry and head for hilltop. Saw Tim on the way, punched with Ken.
4. Did not like map
Bad compass work
Lacked confidence
Followed by others
+02:00
Straight downhill. Missed U shaped trail and hit stream. Find U shaped trail but cross trails are indistinct. Think I cut in at the right place but lack confidence. Miss east and 4 of us go astray. Figure it out first and Tim goes with me.
5. Straight at it and off the trail/veg boundry junction. Tim follows. Ken and Marty appear to take the trail around.
6. Hesitated
Not sure of the reentrant, but find the stream ok. Lose Tim on this leg.
7. Off the trail/stream junct.
8. Decide to do the "F" window as I think that will leave me much closer to the start/finish, where the start triangle is. Forgot about the remote start so did the wrong window
9. Handrail along the veg boundry. The deciduous woods were much faster than the pines.
10.
11. Pick up reentrant then swamp
12. Bearing. After early jitters, seem to be in a good rhythm now that no one is around. Woods are slow, especially the pines.
13.
14. See Ross at the break gearing up to use a bike. I decided not to use a bike as I have no mountain biking experience, and a 9k O loop doesn't seem the best way to start. Also had no way to mount the map. Was gambling the running/biking choice would come out about the same. They tell me I'm in 4th. I leave before Ross does.
15. Along fence, past 22, then cut thru woods, coming out about 100m west. See runner with "marathon" shirt leaving.
16. Due south contour along then pick up southeast trail. Pass Marathon on this trail. Cut straight at it at trail junct and hit stream. Marathon catches back up.
17. Bad map reading
+03:00
20 contours to climb, no matter how you slice it. I hesitate to plan and Marathon takes off down the east road. That looks like the best choice so I do the same and he appears to hesitate at the first trail junction. I cut in and follow the stream looking for the big junction. Slow going. Misread some streams and end up on the (now northeasterly) road again. Not sure where I am, so just head due north up the hill and hit the trail 250m east.
18. Cut across off bend
19. Tired
Back to 15 then up steep hill. Have to walk up hill. Not running full tilt at all on the trails. See Charlie on a bike as I cut out of the woods
20. Did not like map
Cut across the saddle to save three contours and the roundabout way of the trail run. Light green was really a jungle, seemed at least med green to me. Miserable.
21. Thought about cutting but take the trail to the north. See Marathon again leaving the control.
22. See the fields in the private property so take the trail around. Had my map folded so did not realise only part of the property was out of bounds and the fields were in bounds. Possibly just as well as I have no idea if they were overgrown or runnable. See Marathon leaving this control as well.
23. Tired
Cut to road, uphill to trail, cut across spur to other trail. Really starting to fade. Think I lose Marathon on the hill climb, but I have very little left. Figure to be in 2nd to 4th now, not sure of the mountain bikers but figure I'm behind one runner. Get to the ctrl and it looks like only one clothespin was taken, though how can you really tell. Suprised to see someone (I'm not sure who) on a bike on the trail leaving west.
24. Biker turns south at the trail junction to the west of 21, I take the north which looks unridable. I run hard for the first time in a while in case I can pick up a place on the rider.
F. And in. Ann says no bikers have been thru 22 so I'm figuring 2nd place if I hustle. Thanks all for a fun race!
