Race Evaluation

US Short and Long Championships: Green X2 (Long-O)

Charlie

1. Including map line to triangle. Angled downhill through thick stuff and along the base of the hill to the stream, then up the hill to the control.
2. Straight, stopped a bit in the reentrant under the circle, then pushed on and got it.
3. Drifted downhill to just right of stream, to end, then through broken ground.
4. Straight, slow looking for a flag.
5. N to trail jct, then N to first left, past route between 7 and 8 from yesterday, N along trail to jct, then W. Uphill toward building in yellow. Saw Jim Henderson up ahead, who cut off earlier, and Peter Dady who kept going W. Straight from hilltop.
6. Drifted a bit right under small cliffs, then around the corner. Had misread at first and though cliffs were facing south, but figured it out.
7. +00:30Not the best route. E to park road and across to lower road, then left to parking lot, cut corner to main road, then right on trail across wide spur, picking up next park road to main road again, then right through parking lots and builidngs , then pretty straight. Got to the trickle, but it was pretty dry, so I thought maybe I needed to go right. Bad choice. Got to the steep part and didn't see anything so had to backtrack.
8. Straight, maybe a touch east to make sure I could hit it easily. Saw the gatorade jugs from a distance
9. Including 28 seconds drinking gatorade; along trail to trail junction near bridge, then through marsh. Moving slower now.
10. Easy
11. +00:10Along trail then right under base of cliffs and across spur. Nadim and another guy went stroking by. Couldn't read the circle. Thought there was a rock but wasn't sure. Came in from bend in trail just past the yellow and got a little off to the N. If I'd realized there was really a rock in the circle I would have found it more easily, as it was a fine rock.
12. Easy.
13. OUt to road and past open field to rough open, then angle across to stone wall, across small spur and streamlet, up small trickle and S to bigger stream, then uphill to jct and up spur between stream arms to control
14. Trying to go E, but keep drifting down hill. Finally hit yellow and small W-E trail. Tried to cut corner, but slammed on a cable strung up for a ropes course. Cramped up, but was chastened enough to take the trail the rest of the way, or almost the rest of the way.
