Contact lens in my right eye was poked out by a branch. Actually spent about a minute trying to put it back in without success. My hands were too dirty anyways. After dropping the lens to the ground and losing it for good, I decided to go on one-eyed. This took some getting used to. I was already a bit disoriented by the incident, and now my eyes can't focus clearly. I proceeded in the next minute or two overrunning the control a line below where it's hung, all the while running into various trees and shrubs. Finally relocated at the big ditch SW of flag and backtracked to control.
4. Straight bearing.
5. No problem. Went around reentrants then follow top of spur to root stock. A bit slow punching.
6. Running with a couple of guys by now. Went up over the spur and down. Bearing was slightly off to the left.
7. Pretty much followed the red line and contoured around. It wasn't fast, but the footing wasn't terrible either. Saw a guy went up and around the ditches. That may be a slightly better route choice given the ground conditions.
8. Went around right of first ditch, then down and up to the camp ground. Ran straight through to the flag.
9. Didn't plan ahead when going to 8, so was a bit slow coming out of it. Ran the pavement until the first semi-open area, then across past the next pavement into the white. Picked up the trail and came out left of the building.
10. Avoided the climb and ran around the reentrants. Someone just ahead of me at 9 took the straight line. It was a shorter route but not a faster one.
11. Mostly followed the red line through the open forest and field. By now I'm getting more used to the map and the speed.
12. Straight.
F. Straight to the finish chute. I really wanted to pick up more speed but the ground was so uneven I ended up spending more energy trying not to sprain my ankles.
