WCOC Tarrywile Meet: Red

Charlie

1. Up the path to the yellow to the old drive, past the chainlink fence and straight in. could see the rock from a distance. Thought about going around on the trail to the left to save climb, but that didn't seem worth it.
2. Confused parallel features
+03:00
Took the OB seriously, and went way down left to the trail through the dark green and the field to the trail in the corner. Cut up hill toward the slot in the hillside and into the narrow reentrant up top. turned a bit wrong up top and got caught in a parallel feature that was partly obscured by OB lines.
3. Rocky and slow, but ok down to the trail. Left trail at sharp bend to the NE of control, then in on compass and looking for the spur. Could see the flag through the laurel before the boulder.
4. Maybe better to go straight W to the nearest part of the road, but went on a pretty straight line to the corner of the road and trail near the control. Pretty slow going, between the rocks and the laurel. Swiss guy Peter passed me going pretty quick. Climbed up through the cliffs and spiked it.
5. Saw Peter going fairly south. I went more SW on a line for the trail junction, and hit it right on. Trail to the bend near the marsh, then in pretty straight. Saw Peter up ahead of me too high and too far right, but he got there well before me.
6. Picked up unmapped trail, and tried to save contour. Ended up being only one or two lines high, and easy.
7. Aimed to go straight, but drifted right and hit EW segment of smaller trail into larger trail. Peter was coming up hill from the control. Around left on trail for a bit, but there are lots of trails there, so just went in on contours. Easy.
8. Bad route choice
Didn't like the looks of the thinner trail, because of the early climb, so went around to the left on the thicker trail, all the way to the junk car, then E on the trail to the top and down under the big cliff and straight in. Couldn't see flag until I was right on top of it, but picked up the stream coming out of it a bit earlier.
9. Did not like map
+07:00
Angled down to the outlet of the upper pond, then planned ot follow the trail, but there are lots of trails. Looking for the 5 meter cliff, and climbed the one closest to the circle but no control!!! Climbed another one, but still no luck. Finally found it almost on the ground. Turns out it had been moved to a 0.5 m cliff, but the clue sheet wasn't changed.
10. Easy, if slow.
