Race Evaluation

NEOC - Mt. Tom: Red

cmorse

1. +00:20safe route - up road and through 2005 billygoat start, a little high, control site seemed not quite in sync with map but found flag quickly
2. +00:30straight but got drawn off by control on lower stone wall, reclimb to control
3. straight and clean, but slow going in snow, hands very cold
4. right of line, then down spur, dropping down at the appropriate point
5. up reentrant, then along L side of ridge, boomerang shaped knoll very evident
6. +01:15confused in here, felt like I was in a reentrant, so ended up checking the larger knolls above steep slope first, once I saw the drop off, I quickly went back
7. fell coming down hill from #6, fell hard, bruising L thigh, shook off snow and moved on, albeit slowly, right of lake, straight over
8.
9. contouring on bearing, spiked it
10. +00:30slow and steady on bearing trying to pick up features, wound up a little low just S of larger cliff, climbed back above and contoured over - bottom of reentrant looked like pretty crappy going, although on the map it looks fast
11. due N, climbing gradually due to cleaner routes (should have gone straight to trail like PG), ended up high and butt-sliding down to trail, trail around to junction, down across stream and across open area, pretty much followed R side of trickle up hill and saw obvious boulder well in advance
12. +00:30stayed on the R side of line to avoid in/out of reentrants, kind of running along top of ridge, saw boulder come up but wanted a second boulder, went about 10m beyond boulder and saw nothing, turned around and saw flag - not sure where the first boulder was
13. +00:20back track and climbed on open slope above cliffs rather than pick through rocky slope below cliffs, momentary hesitation to make sense of terrain once beyond big cliff, then corrected L and right in
14. straight, picked up trail in order to hit bridge, then over
15. +00:20dry across stream, R of marsh, up reentrant but hesitant as knolls I saw looked too far up hill, one contour under circle so the area looked like it should have been flatter, but up and in without error
16. downhill a bit to get clear of complex terrain, then across slope and in.
17. +00:20to trail, down to dot knoll, a little past then cross slope - was looking in the reentrant (no flag), then read clue and saw flag behind an evergreen on the spur
18. really sore and skittish on slippery slopes, so trail ran all the way down, through parking lots and in - not the fastest, but best for me at the time
19. parking lot, over to bridge, down to control from above (one final butt slide), climbed out and in
F. A nice course, no major navigational errors but cold and slow moving intitially, then warmed up and crashed hard which subsequently slowed me down again. Upon returning to finish, couldn't get my glove off, turns out my left thumb was sprained (later xrays showed no break) and palm turning black and blue. Quite sore this evening, but nothing a bit of Vitamin I won't cure.
