DVOA Fair Hill Classic: Green X 1

Charlie

1. +00:15Through the woods, but drifted right and hit another knoll. Realized I hand't seen the stream yet and then ok
2. Straight, and surprised when I banged into the fence. Climbed over with some trepidation, and then fought through the green to the other side. Continued to the ditch and then straight down and in. On balance a good leg.
3. +05:00Straight line. Hit the green y control on the rootstock and saw where I was. Continued on to the stream, but couldn't find the boulder. Circled around a bit, found another control on a rootstock. Tried to relocate off fences and buildings to increasing frustration. Back to the Green Y control and in again on compass and got it.
4. +02:00Feeling pretty unsettled. Out the road and to the trail. My right knee started acting up and tried to run through it. Hit the trail on the left and started down it, but it didn't look right. Not sure what I thought I was looking for. I had only planned to be on it 50 m or so, but ran on past, until I saw a stream downhill on my right. Down to it and realized it was the wrong stream and headed back up and over the spur to the control.
5. +00:30Around the right of the green blob and on compass, looking for a rootstock. Kind of a little one and I went right by it, finally looking back and seeing the flag.
6. +00:30Up to the trail and cut the corner of the field. Not too smart. Got hung up on green and fence getting out of the field, but then ok running down on compass.
7. Just straight. Looked for the trail on the left but never saw it. I could follow the shape of the spur ok and saw the reentrant opening up from a distance. A little slow but good navigation.
8. Followed the deep reentrant on my left for a while, and had planned to go high and around to the control in yellow, but drifted toward the trail on the right and hit it at the field. Should have just aimed for that in the first place. Across the yellow under the horse jumps, on trail (mostly) through the woods to the field corner, through that to the woods again and left of the green blob and in. Could have saved time by running more and looking less in the first 200 m or so.
9. Right of the stream, then up on the spur. Misread a bit and thought the knoll would be right of the spur rather than just at the end of it, but saw the flag and no problem.
10. Left out of the control to the trail , then left it when I hit the field and aimed to go just left of the two trees at the water tanks. Down to the forest corner and the trail. On trail for about 80m, then angled in, with shallow reentrant on my right, and leaving green blob on my left just before the bag.
11. Crossed the stream then up to the trail. Moving pretty slowly uphill. Left trail at bend, left marshy reentrant on my right and straight to the little gate segment, or whatever it was.
12. +01:00Out to the trail, and in a little too quickly. Lots of people milling around in the vicinity of the dot knoll near the fence, which seemed too far right, but I was sucked right in! Relocated off the big squared off reentrant and was first of this group to find the right knoll.
13. Out to the road and saw the fence. As I went around the corner saw Rob Tryson, who had been behind me, bearing down on the control from the right. He had found the gap in the fence, and I was ticked.
