DVOA Fair Hill Classic: Red 1

1. Took it cautiously from the path near the corner of the woods.
2. Crossed the creek just left of the line, straight in from there. Still cautious.
3. Let myself get pulled left by the stream, but knew the distance to the rootstocks.
4. Between the OB areas to the trail junction, then angled toward the creek.
5. Leaving 4, I had a brain cramp and thought I was leaving 5, so I started too far N. Realized I was in the woods too long and what my mistake was (glad it wasn't a 180). Ran across large field to gap to smaller field and ran along creek from where field jutted closest to control.
6. Saw how close road was, and changed my mind from my "attempt" while leaving C4, and crossed at close crossing point. Angled across field to trail into woods, then spent 3x the possible difference in route time deciding which trail to attack from. Just make a freakin' decision.
7. Crossed creek right away and followed it.
8. Managed to cross creek before getting a good look at the map, and had to cross again, but got up the hill smoothly for a good look at the control.
9. Started slowly here, and didn't have a solid overall plan for this leg. Had a decent route out to the clearing, then got blind to the map - didn't see the trail next to the line through the middle woods, so I went WAY (200m) right of the line into the control woods. Definitely my worst leg of the day. Made things worse my punching without a clue where I was going next.
10. Eventually went west to the nearest trail, but it looked like it disappeared, and I lost time going on the W trail along the stream to the main trail. Much smoother from the clearing - crossed the road at the gap near the house, then into the woods on the short trail at the corner, provided a great line thru the VERY runnable woods. Hopped on the smaller trail to the ditch that led to the control.
11. W to the creek, but didn't cross until after I saw the cliff on the other side. Followed the small stream to the control.
12. N across stream, staying close to it.
13. NNE to edge of field, then continued thru gaps, staying 100-150m right of line. Entered woods at main trail, to junction, then pretty straight to stream junction.
14. Let myself get pushed too far right by vegetation. Someone was able to pass me by taking a more lt green route - couldn't rally and catch him again.
F. Nothing left - 4 seconds slower than Nate on this.
