2011 US Classic Championships: Day 2 - Green Y

1. Headed SW on the small trail, in part because I had seen others go that way. Cut into the woods when the trail veered, spotted the first rootstock, and had my eye open for the stone wall to keep me from drifting right. I didn't see the next rootstock, and when I looked closer, I saw that what I thought was a stone wal was actually just a park boundary. I looked to my left and saw the painted blazes, and a rootstock just behind me. I ran up to it but -- no control. I was just about to run off in sme random direction when I looked on the other side of the rootstock (the trunk side) and saw the control. Who the hell puts controls on the trunk side? Technicallly, there's nothing wrong with that, although I think it's poor form, because it's a 50-50 proposition as to whether an incoming runner will be blocked by the trunk.
2. Across the stream, found the trail, followed it as far as it went, and then tried reading contours. I should have looked for the walls. Lost by the time I got up top, but I knew to stop because I saw the marsh up ahead. No idea where I was exactly, but I identified a hill and a marsh, and was able to find the control, SA says no tim lost -- phew!
3. Saw this as a tricky leg and decided to be careful, but failed. Tried to count marshes, but I couldn't tell what was actually a marsh. Tried reading contours when I got close, unsuccessfully, but then I spotted a control, which didn't look like it was the right feature. I checked the code and it wasn't, (Turns out it was about 70 m SW of my control.) I continued E to relocate on the steep slope, and followed that N to pinpoint my location. I got to about the right spot, looked up to where I thought the control would be and didn't see it, went a little further to verify my location, and on a second try I found it. I was thinking that I probably lost about 4 minutes, but SA says only 2.5.
4. I could run hard past the control I had already seen, and the contours made sense to me the rest of the way -- best split.
5. Following the marshes -- easy.
6. Almost straight W to the road, on the road for just a short bit, followed the wall as far as it went, then aimed off to the right so that I could go around the NW end of the marsh and have that for a good attackpoint, which worked great.
7. Pursuing Istvan, who I had already made up a lot of time on.
8. Close to straight. I was with Istvan at teh beginning, but left him behind. Ran past a control (on the other Green course) that was on no feature that I could discern. I looked for and found the stone wall on the right, and was able to atack from the end. Ran through one reentrant, but knew that I had to keep going because it wasn't deep enough. The control had fallen down, and I tried to set it up again, but something in the base of it was bent and I couldn't get it right. I heard others coming behind me and left it for them to deal with.
9. Plenty of walls and marshes to check off en route, so I knew where I was when I reached the road. Turned in just after Gramps Camp, and read my way almost all the way, then made a small mistake and ended up at the two-line marsh just SSE of the control, beyond the patch of yellow. There were other people heading for the control, so it was easy enough to correct.
10. Ran hard past ruins and walls to the road, followed it to the indistinct trail, to the wall, up the hill to the other wall, N to a third wall, and into the control from the E to avoid the green.
11. Straight, a bit right of the line, didn't run on the road at all, easy enough control located on collecting features.
12. Perplexed by tall fences up ahead, thinking that they were around the ball fields, not understanding that I was already in the ball fields and t he fences were around the track. Also didn't realize that I had a final control to punch until I saw it up ahead.
F. Around the perimeter rather than jumping fences, which I've heard may have been faster (but I wasn't about to do something that might piss off the school people anyway). Felt like a good run, but I hadn't caught Tom Svobodny (he also had a good run), and it wasn't until I saw Tim and Kevin's results that I thought I might have won.
