1. | I finished my brew in an average time but got moving okay with the front pack. Randy Hall veered off to go straight but I followed behind Eddie Bergeron and the crowd on the trail. I hadn't run much lately on account of my calf/achilles injury. The pace felt brisk but I wasn't out of breath until climbing out of the first gully. My reading in this terrain and at this speed was marginal but I anticipated the control as we approached it.
2. | I think I was just ahead of Eddie at this point and Dan Quinn was ahead of me. I used the trail a bit and could see the control coming up.
3. | +00:15 | I was feeling the pace and began dropping off. Eddie and Dan were both ahead. They seemed to be going further right than I thought we should so I was to the left. I started to lose count of reentrants so after seeing a control to my right, I didn't go to it initially. After a few seconds, I thought I'd better check it out and it was the right control.
4. | Eddie and Dan were already climbing down the reentrant leaving #4 when I hadn't gotten to it yet. They were coming out to the left of the control and that drew me left. After climbing the reentrant, I saw the field but no control. Dave Onkst came in from an odd angle and I told him I was looking for #4. I don't know if he'd seen it yet but I soon found the control and later found out that Dave found #4 before #3.
5. | On my own now, I went on bearing to #5 and moved more cautiously around the green parts. I spotted the lone tree and soon the control on the other side of it.
6. | I went straight but got a little to the left. Crossing above a stream confluence, I climbed out, turned right and saw the small earth wall-like feature.
7. | +00:30 | I went left pretty quickly to use the trail however I was a bit too far left. I had to come more right to get on it. Once on it, it was straight forward. AP says I lost a minute but I probably only lost 30 seconds. The straighter route was probably faster if one hit it correctly and I didn't want to risk it. It also saves energy to use a trail and that benefiits me later in a race. As I was a approaching, I saw other runners doing a shorter course but I also heard others approaching from what might have been a straight route.
8. | Straightish to the fields. I saw Valerie Meyer going out as I was coming in.
9. | Since we had to keep our map cases, I fumbled pulling my map out. Dave Linthicum helped. My drinking time seems slower than others. It didn't seem to take a minute to go over and insert my new map but I wasn't moving that fast.
10. | Up the road and to the pole. I had seen this control before the race.
11. | Through the tall grass, sometimes waist high, I ran through most of it and passed Valerie. I had aimed off to the left. Coming over to the right I went slowish. I was basically looking for a clump of green and had read more carefully I would have seen both rootstocks in the green X that Ted Good uses. I examined the first, then saw it on the second.
12. | Up the field through the tall grasses going uphill, I had to walk a bit to keep from tripping. Though the control was a lone tree, the barn corner was more prominent and I went to it.
13. | I cut across the uncut grasses and went down the field edge where it had been cut until I could find some white woods. I was a bit uncertain of going too far but I hit the trail and went further to the control.
14. | I went straight as I could while rounding some green areas and I spiked the control.
15. | I followed the linear marsh on my right to the road, then the small stream. The woods were relatively open.
16. | I aimed off to the left but did so much more than expected. I ran along the marsh a long way to the control.
17. | +01:30 | I made a parallel error mistaking the start of the stream for the marsh much closer to the control. I didn't want to go through that green so I started going around. As the stream deepened, I realized my error and crossed. It took me a while getting to the trail from there. I saw Greg Lennon and some others that were running the trail. I was unsure why since it seemed like they were on another course.
18. | In to the exchange area using trails. I passed some deaf women as the trail ended at the field.
19. | A little faster exchange and drinking.
20. | Going up the road, I felt my left calft/achilles giving me more warning signs. I kept moving and cut through the woods not using trails. I thought I was aiming off to the right but in getting around some green areas, I hit the marsh right at the control.
21. | I decided that going around the green would be best but I went a little further and ended up rounding the pond--no matter though. I knew just where I was and went straight to the control using some open ground.
22. | +01:50 | I climbed up a bluff after crossing the stream and got to the old railway trail. I felt I should have been closer to the intersections and the beer must have been taking effect. I turned left up the wrong trail before going through the trail bend and wooden bridge. Seeing the mud and water, I backed out and used trails to cross the stream, then go along side of it. I attacked being very cautious. I ducked the odd black fence-like structure and stepped over the guy wire before spiking the rest of this leg.
23. | +00:10 | I dog-legged back and saw Dave Hauver approaching. Seeing him I was distracted and didn't see the guy wire that I had stepped over before. Dave told me to lookout. I went down in an instant but got back up almost as quickly wanting to put some ground on Dave. I had wondered if he was running another course but he had been catching-up. I continued on trails, then attacked from a bend to the depression using the much more visible field behind it.
24. | +01:20 | Having hit #4 well, I fell into my old problem of wanting to run away from nearby orienteers--Dave Hauver in this instance. I knew this to be a tricky leg coming from the direction of #4. I ran quickly planning to skirt the green a bit. Earlier when I ran around it before, some of the green I'd seen didn't look so bad. When I saw an opening, I took it to shorten distance. My bearing was off. I started seeing other orienteers including Peggy and Heidi and I cut more right. They had been leaving #1, which I found out as I approached. Recgonizing it and getting confirmation from Heidi, I knew what to do from there, spiking the rest of the leg. However, as I approached, Dave Hauver came in from my left just behind me. He had missed too.
25. | I went quickly toward the field on bearing, trying to put some ground between myself and Dave. In the field, I had to cut right a little to get to the copse.
26. | Initially I had thought to use the trail but once I'd gotten throught the worst of the waise high grass, I just used the field edge. I moved pretty well but didn't want to be too out of breath to drink quickly.
27. | Unlike other drinks, I had to catch my breath midway through.
F. | I have long arms. I just about reached over for the final punch. Dave Hauver came-in around just after this. |
