Race Evaluation

US Champs, Day 1: Green Y

dness

1. Feeling fairly confident after a pretty good couple of runs earlier in the week ... run to end of trail, cut across hill, around cliff.
2. N, cut to W of big rock, straight. Hey, not bad (I'm in the lead)...
3. Oh boy. Took a fairly straight path, but when I got to the area I really got confused. Was S I think of the control, and just kept on thinking I was short, eventually reaching my #10. So much for my confidence.
4.
5. Here I concocted a plan to stay high by going E to the big reentrant, than SE. I have NO idea how this landed me at #6. I wandered around #6 for a bit until I compared control codes. 6 wasted contours.
6.
7. NNW to higher point of funky reentrant, then straight -- emerged at a cliff overlooking a meadow, took me a while to figure things out. Still, not a disaster.
8.
9. I had the contours inverted in my head for 1/2 the run, confusing me, but I didn't lose that much time.
10.
11. Ran straight S, marking off wrong knolls on the way, stopped by green. Wandered a bit before heading in the right direction.
12. The first control in the 'interesting' area wasn't too tough...
13. ... but this one I completely messed up. I eventually had to go to the road to reorient. Saw a couple of blue runners punch in in front.
14. I guess I was drawn to the left a bit by the blue guys, because I ended up at the S end of the yellow. Again, back to the road.
15. I thought I was on track but ended up at the nose NNW of #16. I tried to reorient from #16, but found the 'hills' to the S of the control before finally finding #15.
16.
F. Tough running through sandy stuff.
