Race Evaluation

BAOC: Big Basin: Blue

Tundra/Desert

1. Did not like map
+01:30
Went trail (low), then back up. Not the optimum climb but should have been the best attack. But, there was no flat spot just above the top of the reentrant, so I had to work to interpret the mapped situation and locate the control.
2. Did not like map
+01:30
There was another (unmapped) redwood reentrant to the right, so I had to interpret the mapped situiation and locaate the control. As I was done, Mattias Vangbo caught up. About 3 minutes 40 (I started a bit after the clock time).
3. I switched gears and nailed the control a bit ahead of Mattias.
4. Could not relocate
+07:50
Went really high, remembering that there was something funny with how the area was mapped back in 1998. Then descended. No control. Two adventure types looking for it. About a minute later, Mattias arrives. All this time I didn't really go searching for it, just oscillated within a contour and ~30 m of my initial location about 1.5 contours above the very distinct group of burned trees that the control should have been on. I was trying to let the other three find it. But they couldn't. Then mmahr arrives, about 7 minutes 40 on me. I finally get my lazy ass to go look above it, no control. Never went to look below as the hillside was open and clear and I could not see the water jugs. I call the search off and most of us move on.
5. Could not relocate
+03:45
Got there quickly, didn't see the streamer first. Mattias V went waaaay high to look for it, off the map. I instead went past it, to the next large reentrant—nothing. Back. Mattias V now came down from his vantage point and went to check out the reentrant I had just surveyed. Never saw him again. Matthias M was finishing up his search for #4 in the meanwhile. As he got to the area of #5, I decided to go look where Mattias V originally looked. There was a large, several-contour hill there, clearly off the map; no control. I went back down to the correct location. At this point I decided to call it a day, and stopped the clock. The AR types seemed to agree and also head home. As I was jogging down to the road, mmahr runs by and says, "the tag is there." I say, "there is no bag." He goes, "tag with a T, not bag with B... looks like they just forgot to put both of them out." I then recall seeing an orange streamer. I say, "Whatever. I'm done. Good luck."
