Race Evaluation

BAOC Sprint, Anthony Chabot: Sprint

Tundra/Desert

1. The route is here.
2. Did not like map
+02:20
I think Werner and I found a better cliff first... one that was a contour and change lower than the mapped cliff, but close to the centerline of the spur, as the mapped one was. The one that the control was on was at about the right elevation, but off to the S side of the spur, closer to the reentrant.
3. Followed Werner from Control 2 on.
4. Bad compass work
Bad distance judgement
+02:00
This mistake was mine and mine alone... I should have navigated by the contours once I got there, but didn't. Ended up looking close to the start/finish not once but twice. Lost the race here... the mistake at Control 2 was typical for everyone else, and if they lucked out at #2 they lost somewhere else (conservation of luck on poor maps). However, there was a clear way to nail #4 and I didn't.
5.
6. Still behind Werner.
7. With Werner, got into some green at the center of the reentrant. I got out of it quickly and continued down the spur. Didn't see Werner anymore.
8.
9. Ran in track shoes, so had been sliding on the downhills, had to take then slow. But, coming down the hill from #8, my slow speed gave me a chance to survey the terrain ahead all through #10 and to form a plan. Followed said plan, as well as some people through the brush, generally finding better micro-routes. Found the triple rocks, then Control 10, then up to #9.
10. Been there already...
F. Back through the three rocks, getting stuck prior to that.
