Race Evaluation

QOC Pohick Bay: Red

YouRNotHere

1. Started on main trail, then left on what seemed like a horse trail. Near bottom went right and followed re-entrant right to the control
2. Up and over trail, slightly right around some slash then down re-entrant. Jumped over ditch to right then back left and straight to control.
3. Looped around toward the water, found a nice trail but I don't think it was the one on the map because it was too far from water. It took me into the trail on map, then up and off to right into re-entrant to find control.
4. Bad map reading

The first 3 controls were so easy I got too confident, only glanced at the map and started going to control 5. Walked a little way up hill then main trail turning right which was wrong. I was all the way up the hill before I realized my mistake. Back down the trail, off trail to right, follow ditch down until it flattened out, then across ditch to find control. I found this with no problem even though others said it was misplaced. Maybe because I came in from wrong direction it was easier to find.

Lacked concentration
Lacked confidence

Up threading thru green. Hit a trail and should have proceeded across and hit the trail I wanted. Then at the loop road bend which was my attack point I went down too low and had to come back up and attack again. Control was on same level as loop curve.
6. Did not follow plan
Did not check features en route
Underrated difficulty
Bad map reading
Bad compass work
Frustrated

Down across stream and onto a trail going east over stream then up. Plan was to run east from trail across the flat white on the map and work left around the green. I guess I went NE instead and was wondering why I was running into so much green that was not mapped. Then went back and forth along the stream looking for the control. Should have checked compass to see I was going back and forth in the wrong directions.

Down across stream then up. Plan was to edge around the green and hit the trail. Then came to a re-entrant and I thought I could cross that and work my way around the hill staying a little above control but went too far. Should have climbed up to the trail as planned. The control was right off the bend of trail on a knoll.
8. Bad map reading
Bad distance judgement

Across a road on trail and down. Across open field power lines then over stream. Could have cut thru some green but it looked steep. Over road then off trail to right but was too high and had to back track a little to the control.
9. Bad route choice
+00:30
Looped around a little too much toward a parking lot to run on flat ground.
10. +00:20Up steep trail passing 2 runners. Across RV storage lot. Did not trip on the cable across the RV storage lot like the guy behind me. Control was between the green on map - should have found it faster.
11. Did not plan ahead
Tired

Very long leg. Thought I could cut thru some white but it was swampy. Ended up running along road. Then trail down to stream followed stream, then up to camp ground loop. Control off the loop.
12. Up the trail some ways to avoid green and going down into steep re-entrant. Then across to other trail back down then up small re-entrant to control.

I was following 2 guys from green course on final leg from same control on a path with new trees. In effort to pass thought I would try a "short-cut" but veered into a little bit of slash. Dumb!
