Race Evaluation

Flying Pig IX: Sprint

Wyatt

1. Saw Randy run and punch, and did the same. Did manage to find the start triangle and direction to #2
2. +00:05Ran on a little too rough a comparas and bounced out into the field early.
3. +00:15Too rough compass again, plus saw wrong spur (upper broad vs. lower one)
4. Dog leg, fields to 4.
5. +00:03A little hesitant on route then finally decided on viewing hill steepness that back up and around was better. Reeling in Randy at the end - it was much easier to confirm his navigation than to figure out which ditch was which by myself (I wasn't sure he was on until the end.)
6. Starting to slow a bit, even though I now had Randy in sight.
7. +00:04Up, catching Randy, right trails, across beach a little too high (should've dived straight at the trail/bridge), now ahead of Randy. Didn't see bag until I was almost on platform and had to slow and double-check the code.
8. Easy, which gave me time to plan 9, likely as intended. But I planned, badly, to go straight.
9. +00:45It looked like at least 2x as far around as straight, and it was just 3 ditches. But the ditches were bad (as I'd seen a few examples of before) and I the route decision was bad for two reasons: 1) Going around a 5m contour on a 1:10 is cheaper than on a 1:15 map. On a 1:5 map it is vastly cheaper, which I didn't take into account. Plus, a more minor issue was that I planned based on the straight line, not based on the fact that I'd have to go back to the right just to get off the island. Good fair route choice posed by the course setter, and I missed this one badly. I executed it well, but that's only half the picture.
10. +00:10Felt slow due to climb on 9 (I estimate an extra 15 seconds lost on the next 3 legs due to thrashed quads). Kept left in field/road, didn't notice I was as far right as I was exiting, but 'dive in & turn left' worked.
11. +00:10Out through the field, then trail. The straighter exit by the building is probably better - another 5 second bonus to the Sprinter who's really paying attention.
12. +00:05Hadn't seen bag before, so I jumped a fence looking into entry/walkway before backing out to the corner
13. Compass, then finally clued in on round building
F. Finished 1 second behind Ted G. and 3 behind Dan S-H. Should've pushed just a little harder... darn. :) #1 learning: 1:5 around-vs-up/down tradeoffs favor around notably more than a 1:10 map at the same contour interval. #2: Check the compass a little better. It's a navigation simplificaiton friend IF you read it right...
