Race Evaluation

Flying Pig IX: Sprint

Nadim

1. I started pretty late in the day and didn't expect the short control in plain sight from the start. Earlier while warming up behind the waiting area I'd seen Eric Buckley running back out to the field and I thought he'd decided to go to #1 via the field. Couldn't find the start triangle and the course was printed lightly.
2. I went out to the field and in on the ride. I spiked it but it was a slower route reflecting poor confidence in the light green forest which had looked worse around the starting area.
3. +00:20I went left of the line past the pavillion and got just past the spur/ditch at the control. I saw the control but was convinced it was for something else. A glance ahead S of the control corrected that thought. I did see Chuck Ferguson in the area and I think I got to the control before him.
4. +00:10I went fairly straight, left of the line. Getting close the control I used the buildings to direct me there but I hesitated there.
5. +00:30I followed the open area until just past the shed then cut in. Trying to get past the worst of the deep reentrants I passed the control and Masha Velichco. I hit the sewers and cut back.
6. +00:25Leaving five, I heard Masha slip and fall. I waited to make sure she was okay. I ran out to the open area but didn't see the trail going to the control. Passing to the next open area, I knew I missed it and cut back to the control.
7. +00:25I hit the first trail and went right. A the intersection, I cut left, not seeing the option to continue that direction then cut left. It seemed so short to go to the next open area so I did and cut right at the round pavillion to go right past #10. Once the lake was in sight I was fine but the damadge of the bad route was already done.
8. +00:08I knew better than to check the control across the bridge but expecting to see the control ahead and not seeing it made me rethink it. I continued to hesitate since I couldn't see it untill the very end.
9. +00:35Once across the bridge I cut left expecting the to see stairs. A guy I didn't know who started behind me was gaining and just crossing the bridge going to #8. This turned out to be a culvert. I cut back right and entered at the white woods to cross the reentrant. I saw the bridge ahead but didn't go that far. Instead, I cut left again, came across the south tip of the open area and continued across the next reentrant to the next open area. I took the ride to the edge of the reentrant and expected to see the control below. Upon re-reading the map I realized it was across the reentrant.
10. I followed the yellow area to the trail and in.
11. +00:20When leaving #10, the guy who I saw at the bridge headed to #8, was just getting to #10. Once in the field I was disoriented. I heard cheers of the QOC crowd who where patiently waiting for me to finish. I thought the building ahead was the big registration building partly because of the QOC shouts. I went around the trees and didn't see the trail option cutting through the woods on the trail. The guy behind me had seen it and beat me to the control. I was surprised to see the control leaning on a stake against the building but it held.
12. I chased the guy in front of me across the loading area and up the hill which I'd seen others running on when I was spectating. There wasn't room to pass.
13. Chasing the guy in front, we hurdled the fence at the corner. I sprinted past him (a small payoff from the recent interval training) after the round pavillion and punched quickly.
F. The guy behind me decided he didn't want to get passed at the end. The QOC crowd cheered me on and I tried harder. I went for the left punch and inadvertantly cut off the guy behind me. I fumbled the punch a little.
