Race Evaluation

Lac Bourgeois B-meet: Long advanced

boyle

1. I ran out the parkway.
2. I intended to run straight over the top but predictably drifted more than 100m left.
3. SSE to trails and stayed on trails 'til last possible moment, however, I learned that many future trail sections were likely to be under water.
4.
5. nice short simple leg along water
6. NE to trail then N off trail but came out at intersection 60m left of the one I wanted then trails to cliff but hesitated on two cliffs going down to correct cliff
7. N to trail, simple leg
8. Bad distance judgement
Totally screwed up this leg, visited two controls from other maps, I may have been distracted by other orienteers but I suspect that I still would have pulled up 200m short as I did.
9. Just when I thought things couldn't get worse, I again drifted >100m left (there's a pattern here) of where I thought I was after compass run to last perpendicular trail.
10. I did not enjoy running trails full of water and biting raspberries but at least I knew the trails I needed. I left trail too soon for final approach.
11. By the lodge, over the bridge and through the parking lot but I SLOWED right down (too much) in the woods.
12. I was very happy my straight compass leg through the green.
13. Nearly went swimming approaching nice flat dry looking pond surface SE of 12, then nearly did the same at pond surrounded by trails and I watched Eric almost go swimming in the big pond.
F. I'd let Eric go up to 13 but easily took better route to parkway after control but had nothing left to race him home.
