Race Evaluation

33rd Annual Blue Hills: Traverse

Charlie

1. Trying to follow Peter, then he pulled up short and right. I went by as I was looking for a knoll. Peter zipped by again just before I got there.
2. Trying to hang onto Peter and others, saw the reentrant developing, so knew just where I was.
3. Following again. Pack split up at the small trail before the green. I would have gone around left, but Peter went up through the green so I hung on. A little left coming out of the green, but no real problem.
4. I punched maybe 5 seconds behind Peter, but by the time we hit the road he was 100 m ahead. Saw him cut left between the pond and the fence. Again, I would have gone on to the trail, but followed the pack up the hill. Peter was long gone. I could see Bob Lux up ahead. Followed Bob along the trail left of the line and around the rocky spur, up the reentrant. Just couldn't close the gap. George cut over the spur and got their before me. Sam was up ahead as well.
5. Up the hill at a slant in the general direction of 7 to the trail. Bob was ahead, and George, and I think Jeff Shapiro. Seemed like it took forever to get to the trail but pretty quick from there.Took the trail to the bend nearest the control then straight in on compass.
6. +06:00Glasses became 100% fogged going down the cliffs halfway there. Proceeded on map memory to within 25 meters, peered down the reentrant but was just a tad too high to see it. After some milling about, saw Pavi headed uphill, and followed her for a bit. Then looked around, hooked up with Ken for a bit until I was sure he had already punched and was going to 7. Back down and found it pretty quickly.
7. Straight. Sam and George were ahead. Off and on I could see a little of the map.Up the reentrant right of the cliffs.
8. Running faster on this mostly downhill leg, glasses clearer. Sam was out in front with a couple of others, so the navigation was easy. Saw the knoll from a distance. George had dropped off and headed left on the trail, so I got ahead of him.
9. Trails around to the North. George cut the corners and got ahead.
10. Out to the road, rather than the powerline, to give me more crossing options. Short stop for a cookie and a drink
11. Got ahead of George, as he was drinking longer than I. Sam was ahead, which made it easy. Glasses still clear.
12. Fast, easy. Could see the knoll almost immediately.
13. Along the road with George, reeled in Sam and Pavi. As we slowed to start up the hill from the trail junction, the glasses fogged again and I was totally map-blind. Seemed too far going up the hill. Of course, I thought this was 1:10000. Silly me.
14. Trail around to the right. Running with Sam. She went over and I continued down. Cut into the woods at the small trail junction E of the control. Pavi went by continuing on the trail low, George came in cutting through the woods from above. George and I went much too high, hitting the trail stone wall junction just behind Sam and Neil. Stumbled downhill, where Pavi had gotten in first.
15. Well behind Sam, Pavi and Neil. They went straight, George and I around to the right.
16. Down to the road and around. Last bit of map visibility for a while. Climbed the hill on map memory. Caught up to Sam, Pavi and Neil. Pavi too far right, George too far left, I may have seen it first, but Sam got there first. Pretty close pack here.
17. Pavi got ahead by staying on the trail, while the others tried to go straighter through thick stuff. Dicey footing going down to the cliff. I was at the back. My watch for this section said 4:32, but that must have been a late punch, as the next split seemed way too short.
18. Badly hung up in the brambles. Fell several times, and hit the road at least 100 meters behind the others. Followed Sam, who was the closest.
19. No visibility. Going up seemed wrong, but the others were all doing it. Passed Sam and Pavi on the way up the hill, Pavi was really fast going down the other side, though. As yucky as it was, I don't think we lost much time. Crossed the marsh in the middle, and followed Pavi and George in.
20. No visibility at all. Just followed.
21. I could see the trail route on the map, and followed Pavi. Sam came by at high speed and dusted us both.
22. No visibility, just followed. Saw Bob Lux ahead going downhill into the control.
23. No visibility, behind Bob and Pavi. Bob punched first, Pavi second.
F. Bob went left, Pavi hesitated and went right. I couldn't see anything, so went with Bob, who seemed more confident. Bad decision! Down the hill to the lower trail, then up and around. I knew almost right away we were going way further than 90 meters. Cost about 7 places, as a big crowd finished in between, including Pavi, Sam, Ken, Andy Hall, Neil, Bob, somebody else? Thanks, Jeff. Lots of fun. Wish I could have seen it better!
