Flying Pig / Interscholastics: Red Day 1

Nadim

1. +00:35All that time crossing the field and I didn't visualize the control in advance? From the field, I came down a reentrant to the trail and attacked without pausing. I missed and ran down the hill almost to the stream before turning back up and hitting it.
2. I went mostly straight, contouring a bit. I counted reentrants but it still appeared quicker than it should of.
3. +01:00I got hung up in the MFR and didn't mistook where I finally hit the field. I cut right into the wrong field, stopped, turned around and decided to go around the vegation instead of through it to the control.
4. +00:15I went straight, crossed the first green break, went down the field to the pond, ran across it (it was dry), then went around the next tree break. There was a road I followed to the second reentrant. I then cut to the trees and realized I was too high. I cut cut back to get there a little.
5. I stayed in the fields, getting well right of the line. As I neared the farm house, I kept checking my compass to make sure I was on target but I had trouble matching up the roads at the gate. I kept running but hesitantly. The buildings didn't match completely so I attributed it to the map not being updated. This would later affect me going to #8. I turned left on the driveway and curled into the woods crossing the reentrant high. I again hadn't checked the control code which would have helped me zero in on the rootstock but fortunately, some others had just left.
6. I chased a junior, then cut right to go around the green. In the process I passed him and he chased me. I moved to the left and stayed on that side of the stream until the running was better on the right. I curved up and spiked it.
7. Leaving #6, I went down the spur. It seemed to take a long time and I got a bit to the right as a unmapped road appeared at the bottom. I cut left and crossed the stream into a gully. I climbed up in the gully and hit the trail. I passed a few others and hugged the steeper part of the hilll instead of using the fence. After I realized I'd gone far enough, I recognized the green on the map to be a fallen tree. I ran around that, saw the knoll and punched.
8. +34:00I set off straight but climbing a bit heading toward the road. I thought that I should eat a Gu to keep from going brain dead. I decided to eat one once I got to #8. I crossed the fence, and noted the distinct tree before the reentrant. Next, I turned left to contour across the reentrant. I think I crossed it but am now unsure. I turned up hill to avoid the multi-floral rose (MFR). I must have been distracted and didn't read my compass much. Frustrated w/the vegetation, I caught sight of a field and knew I'd have to go backward about 30 meters to get there. I did but when I checked my compass, I realized I'd have to keep going the wrong way to use the field. Perhaps somewhere in the MFR I'd turned the map 180 and didn't realize it because the number 8 looks close to the same upside down. In any case I was out in a field and presumed my position (I was actually somewhere SW of #6 at this point). I had trouble matching up the fields but rounding the edge of the forest, I finally got to the road. I ran down it and could see a gate/split in the road. Fearing I'd passed the dirt road that points to the control, I decided to cut through the campground. This was a big parallel error because there were two campgrounds. Once in the woods, I was surrounded by more MFR and I realized it was taking much longer than it should to get to the stream. Remembering the map inconsistency at #5, I attribuited this partially to map error and the slow travel in the MFR. I finally got there and saw orienteers searching the other side of the stream where I thought my control should be--all seemed good again. I turned upstream and eventually found #111. I was actually very near #1 which was #112. Turning around, I ran downstream but still couldn't make things match right. The angle of the stream was close but the reentrants dropping into it angled differently. Soon I came across a round metallic pipe-like thing (a well perhaps) but couldn't find it on the map--another map error? I ate a Gu and soon turned back upstream hugging it close. Next, I came across a derilict car, also apparantly not on the map near a reentrant that wasn't on the map and went on--what poor mapping I thought. Eureka finally set in when I looked wider and realized that I was fully 900 meters away from the control, in the wrong big but parallel reentrant. I ran to the road from there, cut in at a roadlike structure where the map showed a fence, dropped to the stream and "pegged-it" rather than spliked it.
9. +00:15I'd been searching the map enough by this point that I'd almost memorized the route to #9. I stayed high, on the line and crossed some reentrants before crossing the stream bottom. I came up in the gully at first but then on the spur left of the control. After climbing sufficiently, I cut across the gully and back a little, up to the control. Another older guy in white had just punched.
10. +00:15I was tired at this point and studied before running off. I missed the option to go around the ridge to the right. The climb was slow and I caught the older man while I moved around some vegetaion. I paused to drink at the trail intersection and the older man caught me. I followed him into the fields and cut down to the corner, passing the older man again. Dropping into the ditch to the west of the control, I went down to a flatter spot. Not seeing it, I soon turned left to get there. The older man was leaving as I got there.
11. Down to the creek, I didn't pause while crossing. R. Paddock passed me and appeared to start going straight up. I cut left to go around the nose. R. Paddock came-in behind me but passed on the right as I went L to cross the stream. I stuggled up and could see the control from below.
12. Up and around, I dropped right in.
13. Going down, I swung wide left to go around the green before cutting back.
F. I had a young woman in front of me. I ran hard to catch her and any others and did.
