Race Evaluation

U.S. Ski Orienteering Championships: Red Long Distance

jima

1. Took left route to 1st control. Maybe a few seconds faster on right route, but didn't want to start up that hill.
2. Took right route. Through upper warm-up field, passed through a bunch of tourers / snowshoers in the next field. Overshot snowshoe trail, saw field, doubled back and in.
3. Out to S, looped on the solid trail, to the biathlon field, then around tto the left and approached from above.
4. Took cutoff to trail along marsh, put ski tip through barbed wire loop and right foot came to abrupt halt, just about pulled my foot out of the boot. Picked myself up, confirmed no blood or broken bones/equipment. Took center trail up for the long slog and approached from above. Kept plugging, skis were OK. Went past control on main trail, then cut in, unsure of climb if taking the first approach.
5. back up to main trail, down to corner. cut over on nice snowshoe trail, then right. Road crossing was OK - kept skis on.
6. Down to lake, went down on butt on last 5 feet of bumpy, thin cover section. As I was climbing up the bank off the lake, looked back and saw someone, thought it was Aims C, who started 4 minutes behind me. Turned out to be Steve O, who started 2 min in front of me. A bit more up and down in the last hundred meters than I expected. Also seemed longer from the lake than I expected.
7. Really torn on this route choice. Wanted to go along the lake - flat and fast, but no good way to get back onto the trail network. Opted for trail between lake and road, stayed right at the option to corss the road, then came around the corner and a massive hill. But what goes up, gets to come down. Crossed the road, straight at the next junction, duck under the rope and go right.
8. Opted to left route, neither way looked good. Wasn't liking the climb at this point. Could hear Steve coming up behind me. Thought he was going to blow past coming into the map exchange, but he eased off a bit.
9. Quick stop for a drink, then try to figure out which way to the next control. Into upper field, out the far corner rather than going by the waxing hut - too much of a crowd. Through the woods to the next filed, cut the corner up over the hill with Steve hot on my tail. Across the road then a super exhilarating downhill, which I decided I didn't want to come back up. Kept in front of Steve somehow.
10. Kept going, across the road and down to the lake. Steve came blowing by, skiing smooth and fast. Up the noswhoe trail by the side of the cabin, across the road / field / marsh. Steve got hung up going up a short steep section and went down backwards. had a couple of seconds to catch my breath, then got by him and kept going. thought he'd be back on my heels, but it must have taken him a bit to get back together.
11. Over to the top of the biathlon field - contemplated to right of range, back thru the barbed wire cutoff and approach from below. Instead, took first left up the valley, then zig-zagged across hill top and down. Better might have been to take 2d left just above range, with shorter zig-zags.
12. Punched, flipped around and back up the way I came. Stee O came blasting around the corner, then looked nervous about heading onto the dashed trail, which wasn't too bad. Back up on left route, then cut over and final approach from right.
13. Left route. Steve coming in as I'm going out. Pass Sara Mae Berman Comin gup into the field
F. Glad to be done.
