1. Followed others
didn't take the route that i wanted to, i was influenced by all the previous starters that took a sharp right along the path after the start control, instead of going straight across the open circle.
2. Tired
+00:10
encountered some traffic and battled running up the hill - i haven't kept my fitness with the lack of training.
3. Did not follow plan
Read map too late
Bad map reading
Tired
Disturbed by others
+00:40
only major error in the event - with all the pedestrian traffic i wanted to get away from the control quiclkly and took off along the path. by the time i relocated i was south of the enclosure that i should have gone on the north side of. i then had to go up the hill, i took out my compass to check my map orientation.
4. Tired
+00:20
very long down hill run. I did well on the first 1/2 but couldn't keep the pace. I slowed to a walk past the seals, and then again up the last steps - just a fitness and foot thing but I should have been 20 seconds faster.
5. Tired
first fine navigation leg. and i was careful to not loose my footing or sprain my ankle.
6. Tired
+00:05
initially i thought i could get through between the buildings, but saw from the control that i couldn't so i had to quickly replan my route and exit angle. I should have run faster for this leg.
7. Tired
+00:10
heart rate was maxing out - i debated between going left up to the path or right through the building, eventually going through the building for no apparent reason. the paths were very slippery so i took it carefully - on a dry day would have been 10 seconds quicker.
8. Tired
+00:30
long run up the hill - fitness slowed me here and i walked twice, once when i left the path, and then up the stairs. I opted to go left route choice. not sure which was quicker, but i should have been substantially quicker. it would be interesting to see if Alex's 32 seconds was route choice or running fitness?
9. Tired
+00:15
again two route choices without an obvious choice. i went left around the lions and was very carefull not to slip on the walkways, and i slowed to a walk through the lion shelter area. the right option may have been quicker. again Alex took 15 second on me and it would be interesting to see if it was route choice or running speed. my foot was killing me but i was pleased with my lungs. my heart was maxing out at 190 though showing i have lost a lot of fitness in the last 3 months.
10. Tired
+00:15
not a difficult leg - so all the loss was running speed - lungs, heart and foot related. slowed to a walk on the paths around the last enclosure.
11. Tired
+00:05
interesting looking at the GPS track for this leg - i didn't go as straight as i had though i had. but i ran hard down the hill.
12. Tired
+00:10
two route choices here - i opted not to go uphill retracing my steps. i walked up the starirs close to the control, and was a bit disorientated as i got to the top of them. i thought i was looking for steps, the hatching on the building marker on the map was such that it looked like stairs. took a couple of seconds to realize i was actually looking for a building. it shows that i didn't really look at my control description very much. i checked a couple of numbers along the way, but only about 5 of the 14 controls.
13. Tired
relatively obvious run cause i knew where i was and where the last control was so didn't need the map to nav.
F. Tired
looks like my days of winning the run-in are limited to the longer ones when i can accelerate to top speed. i claim a sore ankle held me back on this one.
