Race Evaluation

O Marathon II - Fair Hill NRMA, MD: Full Marathon

donkst

1. Came to the start triangle with a pretty positive attitude. It was cold, but totally clear, good running weather. I felt like I was in pretty good shape and wanted to push it to see how well I could do. My confidence level was pretty high, for me. The spirit among all the starters seemed high, albeit, a bit "chilled." I followed the mass down the main trail about 500 meters NW of the control and then cut in with most everyone else after the stream and headed through the woods on a straight line. I joked with Wyatt who cut off into the woods very early (on an entirely different line) and I said something like "We'll see, We'll see," meaning we'll see which route was better. We arrived at the control within a few seconds of one another.
2. Just followed the crowd. Was running in Wyatt's shadow.
3. A bit frustrated by the fact that I already had to pull the second 1:10 map out of my back pocket. It had been a real pain to fold small enough to stuff it into the pocket properly. For some bizzare reason I thought the controls would be more evenly distributed between the maps, but no go. I had to just rely on following everyone while trying to refold the first map down to the right size for pocket stuffing. I punch a few seconds after Samantha. She has already had to endure hearing my complaining about the map swapping!
4. Wyatt leads us out of 3 and Sam and I follow his line. Halfway to control I have my first "flake-out" moment when I ask Sam if I punched number 3. She assures me I did. Yeah, of course I did. I really do remember punching when I think about it. What was I thinking when I asked--a pretty spacey couple of seconds though.
