Race Evaluation

Wolf Den NEOC meet: Red Course

Charlie

1. From the field corner over the stone wall and on compass, noting the boulders in the rocky ground along the way.
2. +03:00E to the marsh, where it looked reasonable dry, but I got in a hole and my shoe was sucked off. Major fishing expedition to get it back, and then it was full of mud and I had to dig that all out. Lost some of my zip for a while. Control was easy navigation - just up the marsh.
3. Contoured and climbed to the trail, ran to just before veg boundary and in. Easy
4. Never saw the first marsh, either on the way to 3 or on the way to 4, but got in way more mt laurel than showed on the map. Down along the big cliff, around the marsh and in. Control was a little higher in the reentrant than I expected, but no problem
5. +03:00Drifted too low and got pretty confused. Surprised when I looked up the hill and saw it.
6. Up hill to the road, aiming left to come out near the trail. Trail to the top of the hill, checking out the rock further down as I left the trail, then around the well-defined laurel patch and N to marsh. Bag was a little left of where I expected it but could see it fine.
7. +06:00Generally poor work. Tried to go W to the trail, but kept drifting N and finally had to really disciple myself to go W after the laurel thicket, after foundering for about 400m in the woods. Then trail looking for the bend, but never saw the bend. Trail just seemed to end. Assumed that was the bend and went looking for the stream. Hit sharp bend in trail near stream, but somehow it didn't look right at first, so ran left and then right like a crazy person for a while before settling down. Easy from there.
8. Trail to bridge, road to end of circle. Could see it from there. Easy, but no legs.
9. Started to climb, but it was too hard so switched over to contouring around, keeping marsh on my right and checking off the stone wall and a few boulders. No problem.
10. Aimed for the pond and hit it fine, then across the bridge and up the big hill. Should have angled left more, as I didn't save much ground compared to taking the trail. Then trail around, checking off stone walls.
11. Couldn't quite decide between trail around or through the woods on the diagonal, so split the difference, which was probably the worst choice of the 3.
F. Easy
