Race Evaluation

Billygoat: Billygoat

levitin

1. Average HR 146, HR at end of the leg 154.
2. 155, 158.
3. around on the trails near Peggy. 157, 162.
4. Trails to right. I saw Peggy turn in before the trails but after the swamp. I didn't even see the left option until after the event. I led a small troup along the trails, then stopped briefly for water. Punched just a bit before Peggy.
5. Left. 154, 152.
6. Following, not in great contact 145, 147.
7. Woods were thick here. Marshes were pretty wet. Got separated from Charlie and one other near the circle. By the time I punched, they were long gone. 141, 148.
8. I intended to skip 8, return the way I came to/through 6, hit the water stop, and perhaps catch up with the faster folks I had slipped behind. Instead, I bumbled around, got disoriented, and eventually saw a flag, thinking it was #6. Going to it to check the code prior to relocating, I found it wsa #8, so I punched.
9. Hans was at 8 near me, but I was faster on the trails than he was. Either in approach to #8 or leaving #8, I fell, scraping knuckles. At the aid station, Liz helped me clean up. Hans was ahead of me; Darrel left a bit ahead but I caught him on the way to 9.
10. 154,156
11. 155,159
12. 150,141
13. At or near 12, I saw Jeff Saeger and Rick DeWitt and followed them for a bit. Jeff was to the left of me, and momentarily cursed at the uncrossable marsh. Rick was to the right of me, and went through the crossable marsh. I found a way through the middle without getting too wet, and soon found myself in a train of Rick and George Walker. We took the trails around to the right. When we got due East of the control on the trail, we crossed the slash area. I saw a group coming in from the knoll to the south, among them Sharon. 152,167
14. 162,162
15. Left the aid station headed downhill to the road, catching George Walker and another guy (not Rick). J-J and Stephen were ahead of us on the road, but they did not turn into the driveway. When we rejoined the powerline, they were bogged down (pun intended). I'm glad Stephen had fun in the bog. I would not have enjoyed it, from J-J's description. 158,156
16. 155,156. With George.
17. 155,166.
18. 154,151. George was a little ahead of me.
19. 158,161. I saw the flag before George, who was surprised it was so soon or so high.
20. 159,167. George was off to the left a bit out of earshot when I decided that I recognized the long knoll that I wanted to be on top of. I punched alone.
21. A bit right of the straight line, on the trail to the clearing, then down the steep slope, where I encountered Jeff Saeger again. He said he had skipped, (but I hadn't yet) so I decided to skip 21. I followed the stream to the bend, then angled down to the trail. Jeff was behind me, and I guess he crossed the trail pretty soon to go to 21.
22. Turned left at the trail crossing, over the bridge. The original plan was to run all the way around into the open yellow area to approach 22 from the north. My navigation in the woods was feeling shaky and I noticed I was in plenty of time before the cutoff. South of the control, I thought I recognized the rocky slopeside, but quickly found myself out of contact. I did not find the rootstock. After bumbling around a bit, I encountered Jeff Saeger again near the control. He did 20-21-22 in the time I did 20-22. Overall HR for the skip leg was 147, with a final HR of 134.
23. Jeff led. 154,165.
F. Passed Jeff in the sprint to the end. 167,172.
