Race Evaluation

Billygoat: Billygoat

Charlie

1. Actually reading the map here, which had to cost time.
2. +02:30Going along generally on compass and following a long train when a couple of the folks near me began to think we were heading off too low and too far left, so spent some time milling around before figuring it out.
3. Straight. Some others took the trail around, which might have been better.
4. skip
5. +02:00Left fork. Left of the long marsh, picking up trail near jct and following along left side. found another rock pair with a vetting ribbon, and was feeling pretty bad about it, but met up with Kseniya and Peggy and recovered.
6. Headed on compass for the long spur, bearing off a bit so I could run right when I got on top of it. Couldn't stay with Peggy. Ray Chung was here.
7. Along the spur for a while, then across trail and between marshes, over knoll with boulder and straight in. Sam L passed me here, but headed too far left and I didn't see him again.
8. Back between marshes, then reading carefully the various knolls until realizing I was just heading to a very distinct feature.
9. W to the trail and around. Long time on the trail! Tony F at the water stop, took trail through junky open area and attacked from on top. Alex Jospe was there, and caught up to J-J and Stephen here.
10. Behind J-J and reading this well.
11. Fairly straight. Jim Henderson was here.
12. Looking for wall and following it. Pretty big crowd near this one.
13. Behind Pete B for a while, and kept catching glimpses of Jim H and a guy in a CSU suit. Followed trail all the way to marsh at bottom of logged area, then slogged up the hill.
14. Lost a bit of time because I didn't realize I was looking for a spur, but not much.
15. Out to the road, then in the second driveway and up to the power line. Saw Scott Turner up near the control.
16. Pretty straight. could read things well here.
17. I was falling behind, so made a push to get closer. Paul Bennett and Paul Regan were here.
18. Through a lot of junky stuff, ended up following Steve T down the hill on the powerline, picking up the trail as it headed off the power line and straight from there.
19. Behind Steve T and Scott
20. Fairly good sized crowd, including Phil. We were all too low and to the right, which I might not have figured out on my own.
21. +02:00Tough slog down the treacherous hill from the clearing along the line. Ended up following Steve T. Cut across streams between marshes, and planned to go on top, but Steve was going low so went with him, but we went too far R and ended up at the trail E of the small pond. Easy from there, except all uphill.
22. Falling behind the pack. Got up to the yellow area on the spur, so knew where I was.
23. Had this leg scoped out well in advance, so punched last and headed straight out, passing several folks as soon as I hit yellow, and pushing the pace, although Steve T passed me back and punched before me.
F. Kept up the pace and finished first in my pack.
