Race Evaluation

West Point A-Meet: Classic: Green Y

jima

1. Considered dropping on the trail and backup the reentrant, but quick look seemed to be more contours crossed, so up first, dip down by the stone wall and back up.
2. Pretty much along the line.
3. +01:40Further right of the line than I'd planned, crossed the road and headed up. Hit the trail close to 8, reoriented myself, around the green and the marsh, up into the 2d reentrant, and it didn't look quite right. Circled in a loop to the west, checking out a control that I knew wasn't mine, then looked up and saw it.
4. Pegged it.
5. Surprised by the openness of the green, but the terrain fit, so I went with it. Could see the feature from quite a ways out and just had the "I know it's right behind there" feeling, and it was.
6. Go on a goat path and followed it to the trail, over the top of the hill and right in.
7. Almost went to far left. Saw the rock feature and thought for a sec that it was the rock NNE of 6, but quick compass check confirmed what I was doing.
8. +01:00Did not take the obvious trail. Beeline to the trail curve by the semi-clear area, up that trail through the clearing, then around the side of the hill. Dropped a bit more than I wanted, losing a little time. Forced myself up over the last hilltop to the indistinct trail, past the marsh and boulders, and right in.
9. Nice leg - executed it well - just like PG wrote up.
10. No problem
11. Down the spur, getting chased by a jr sounding like a wheezing freight train. Wanted to wander left, but kept the top of the rock features close by my right. Could see a control off to the left distance, but knew it was too far left and too low. Just starting to get concerned when the control was just beside me.
12.
13. +00:45A long slog, kept trying to push. Got to the knoll and no control, went to the control by the boulder on the northern knoll, even though I knew it wasn't mine, then saw someone ducking behind the tree. Rechecked control description and saw it was end of the stone wall, not top of the knoll.
14. +00:30Through the first thick bit, then took a left, rather than going straight - dumb. Found it right away, just ran an extra hundred meters.
15. +01:05Keeping to the recent trend of not understanding what I should be doing, popped into the S corner of the field by a control, saw it wasn't mine, checked the control and readit as building rather than field, checked behind the connex (as if they'd have 2 controls 5 meters apart). Looked up and saw the contorl at the N end of the field and ran straight to it, but the code didn't match. Finally stopped, looked at my map and figured out where I should go, to the corner of the field I'd just run past without looking.
16. +00:45Since I was on a roll, up the paved road past the gravel trail, up and over the steep spur and ran to the control I saw on the rocky outcrop with the wrong code. Checked the code as I punched, then looked up and saw my control off through the woods. Doh.
17. +00:15Straight out to the trail, left turn, past the worst of the thick stuff, then in skirting the wet. Up the knoll too far right and had to climb throught the deadfall to the control
18. Donw the way I should have gone up, back out to the trail and some more slogging
F. Not a lot left, got smoked by a high schooler...
