Race Evaluation

QOC Manassas: Blue

1. P D P R 1 +02:00Map sucks. Vegetation woefully out of date. There are missing features. North lines are 500m apart instead of the required 250m. Control was on the right feature but I don't believe the feature is in the correct spot. I should probably start by saying the map has some serious problems. It appears to be scaled wrong in several places. It is like the map is stretched in several areas. If you pace count it comes out quite a bit off. Some of the dot knolls are actually root stocks. For control 1, there were two controls about 20 meters apart which is wrong. The green by control one was also different than mapped. I ran to the area where the feature should have been but was way short. I spent a time wandering around looking where It should be instead of just navigating based on the field bend.
2. P D P R 1 +04:00I went along the field, down the rough open to the trail. Someone put the North arrow with large white background overtop the obvious route choice so you can't see the map at all in the critical area. I cut through the slash to the reentrant but there was no control. I wandered a little bit in the green which was no longer accurate in the area. Finally I bailed out to the pit and attached from there. Coming from this direction, you could see the control lying flat against a tree because they hadn't undone the punch string. I was pissed. I rehung the control so it was hanging properly.
3. P D P R 1 +00:20Another control hung about 20 meters from the one on this course. at this point I thought about just quitting the course. Three controls and three problems. believe the feature is also mismapped. It was close enough that it didn't matter much but when you are already pissed it doesn't help.
4. P D P R 1 +10:00I followed the stream around the green areas (mistake, I should have gone through the green which was some of the best woods). The open w/scat trees was very uneven footing and wet. I navigated reading the green and fields. I cut into the final green right tot he reentrant but there was no control. The reentrant was more like a shallow ditch than reentrant. I wondered around quite a while. Finally, I decided to bail out the power line. I was way short. I believe this is one of the skewed areas. I ran a long long way to the power line and cut into the green, and stayed in the green to the control.
5. P D P R 1 I went straight. The green was sporadic and I ran through it without slowing down hardly at all. I am fed up at this point and not trying to run hard anymore. There was water at this control but the jug was just about empty so I only took a sip. There were also micro cups.
6. P D P R 0 +00:20No navigation, road run. control is farther from road than mapped.
7. P D P R 2 I was actually running to 15 instead of 7. fortunately I realized it before I got too far off. Back into the skewed map area. This time I just ignored the distance and read the contours. (actually I just started treating the map as a 1:10,000 instead of 1: 7500 which worked better.
8. P D P R 2 I bounced off the road. Probably quicker going through the green but you can never tell. Control seemed much farther from the road than mapped. Detailed green also not correct. Control was listed as a wet pit but appeared to be a totally full so appeared as a small pond.
9. P D P R 2 +00:30Went straight. Green area was much better than rough open. There is another man made feature in the control circle.
10. P D P R 2 straight.
11. P D P R 3 Ran around the worst green cut over to bridge then through the green. The control was in the green also.
12. P D P R 2 +02:00I don't believe the ditch is in the correct spot. It is much lower than mapped. I Spent some time wandering around in the green looking for it. I attacked off the field corner.
13. P D P R 1 I went up the hill to the flat which is how I know the ditch is too low. at the top of the hill I went Straight. Gimme control.
14. P D P R 0 Ran the same road as earlier to the trail, No navigation.Control number on map hidden by North line. It looked like #4 instead of #14.
15. P D P R 1 Across the fields tot he trail. instead of taking the trail the whole way I followed the north side of the stream for part of the way so I wasn't just running the trail again.
F. P D P R 1 Couldn't find a spot to cross the trail, so I just waded across the stream and went straight. The start and finish both seem to be in "olive green" on the map which means out of bounds. Yet one more thing to complain about.
