Race Evaluation

OCIN 25th Anniversary / Flying Pig XIII / Relay Champs: Friday Middle Red

Nadim

1. Straight there. There was a bit of a mud trail leading out from the start. I hesitated to read.
2. I angled down the hill through the green to the reentrant bottom and crossed it looking for a better way through. After reentrant junction, I climbed and went right past #5, checking the code for later. In the field I cut right and ran through the building to the trail. At the bottom I crossed the bridge and angled upward toward the saddle without going all the way there. I saw the reentrant ahead on my line and realized it was too deep as well as in the wrong place. I cut right a bit and crossed the reentrant to the small side one with the control.
3. +00:10I contoured to the reentrant, then crossed and was just a little low. Perhaps I was distracted by a couple that was leaving.
4. +00:05I was a bit left of the line and climbed a bit high. I got there just after a couple had punched.
5. I ran down into the reentrant and crossed to use the second trail in it. I cut left to go up the spur trail that I'd come down when going to #2. I retraced my steps from there to #5 but almost got a bit too far right.
6. I contoured over but was a bit high.
7. I went down to the reentrant junction and eventually got on the lower trail. I cut up to the upper trail then left it from a bend. I was a bit low.
8. I ran straight mostly ignoring the trails. I was able to keep running while cutting through what was supposed to be a line of fight. I went right to it but had trouble reading the reentrant. While on the run the depression symbol looked like a formline to me.
9. I ran straight at it and figured the fallen trees were the green. I think there could have been more on the map and the fallen trees could have been shown as fight.
10. +10:00I started this one off fine but lost count of things. After crossing the big green reentrant about half way through, I confused a smaller reentrant only a little way ahead for the one with the control. It was deepter and greener than I expected the map to show and unfortunately for me, I had seen a control in it. The control also happened to be in a depression. I punched it (#122) only 1:50 into the leg. For the next ten minutes I went up the reentrant, searched further SE like I should have (but not far enough), went low, went up to the trail and ran along it unsuccessfully trying to relocate, and eventually going back to #9. From there I ran the leg just fine to #10 :(
11. I ran pretty straight, using the fight to keep straght. There were two areas of fight but only one mapped.
12. I ran straight but probably should have used the trail.
13. I ran straight through the first depression area, then to the right side of the green vegetation at the bottom of the reentrant junction. I could see the control far off.
14. I ran into the reentrant and had expected to see the control closer to the trail.
15. I ran straightish but had to force myself to keep going high enough.
16. +00:15I used the trail a bit to get to the bottom of the reentrant junction but I was off of it too. I was mostly following my compass. At the bottom I used the trail to get to the next reentrant and then attacked from there. I angled up the hill but was a bit left. I saw Mike Minium and another person with controls in their hands and since it was late in the day I wondered and asked them if they'd picked up my control. Mike indicated that he had not so I went on and hit the fence. I cut right from there it what seemed to me like a ditch along the fence and was soon at the control.
17. +00:10I hesitated about going up to the field or going straight. Eventually I chose to go straight through the clearings. They were muddy but not hard to navigate.
18. I contoured a bit and recognized the tree tops well before seeing the control. At the end, I chased a youngster who had been walking but strarted running. He was being watched by his father. I punched right after him.
F. The youngster needed to read the map to know that the finish was behind him. Having been looking for the finish long ago, I went right to it ahead of him...
