Race Evaluation

GMOC A-Meet: Relay - Green

jjcote

1. I did pass through the triangle, then
2. took trails around to the left, cut the last corner, and came into control from the west. Passed Eric Smith, who had started a little ahead of me (with Ted Good).
3. West to faint trail, took that to big trail, took that as far as I could, then went straight in.
4. Missed to the right, came up by the two cliffs, heading westward into the control, saw Ted Good on his way to the next control.
5.
6.
7. The saddle didn't look very saddlish on the approach (it did once I got up to it), and I overran maybe 20 m to the west before going up on top of the ridge.
8. Followed the ridge to the west, then took the westmost possible trail route and came up from below.
9. Trails back past start. Slowed down in the poky branches just above the control.
10. Ran at the base of the field, and heard spectators calling my name. As I reached the end of the field, I heard them calling "Ted", and figured (correctly) that Mr. Good was on my tail and that I had better hustle. The last little bit was kind of messy, and at the control I was caught by Davio Dunham and John Fredrickson (both on Red).
11. Along the edge of the field, likewise with the other two. Davio was running away from John, and I considered hollering that this was a really bad idea (which it turned out to be!).
12. There's the cliff -- no flag! Oops, other side of knoll. Ted came in just as I was leaving.
13. Got some encouragement from spectators to maintain my lead. Took the safe route back through the field and up the trail to the start, attacking from the bend.
14. Ted came in as I was going out, and I pushed hard, going essentaially straight.
F. Glanced back as I punched, and didn't see Ted. Whew!
