Race Evaluation

QOC: Beer Chase: Long

Nadim

1. I enjoyed getting a break from the wedding preparation and a chance to just excercise. Technically, I DQ'd because I somehow skipped #6. I compensated by adding an hour on the splits. It was hot and I didn't feel ready to run. Not being a beer drinker with these big glasses, I think my time was okay here.
2. Dave Onkst was fast off the block but I followed Ted Good mostly to #1. It turned out that he seemed to be most correct.
3. Still following Ted to #2. I had a hard time reading the course on the map. The line color didn't stand out and the circles were small.
4. I could still see Ted up ahead and kept after him toward #3. Someone yanked the punch out of my hand while he was trying to clear the bush away.
5. Lots of people here. I thought to stay high to #4 but everyone went low and I followed.
6. Picking-up Marek's trail, we went straight at it.
7. I saw Ted going wide right and Marek Filicko going wide left to #6. I set out between them but not seeing anything, I curved left. Catching Marek's movement in the woods, I must have gotten confused here and just followed him to #7. I didn't realize it until after the whole race that I had just skipped #6--yes I had a lot on my mind and the lack of sleep didn't help.
8. Chased Marek to #7.
9. Chased Marek to #8.
10. Again I chased to #9 Marek having to wait at the punch.
11. +00:30After crossing the stream, I had already made-up my mind to use the trail. Marek ahead of me did the same until we rounded the corner. From there Marek dropped down but I stayed high on the meandering trail until the next big reentrant. I didn't look at the map much and had trouble reading it anyway. In my memory at the time. I thought the control was going to be on the far side of the stream so I crossed it to the clearings. Hearing others on my right I looked again finally and crossed-over too. Marek got there ahead of me along with one other.
12. +01:30Going to #11, I chased Marek and the other guy without reading my map much. After going straight and crossing the stream, both guys paused. Thinking it safest to go right I did, then had to reverse direction. The others did the same though not all at the same time and place. Finally seeing the reentrant, I got there behind the others.
13. Going to #12, I stayed low and gained ground on Marek and the other guy.
14. Going to #13, suddenly there appeared a bunch of people ahead who didn't make the same mistake at #11. I got behind Tom Strat. Everyone seemed to go left early.
15. Still behind Tom, I picked my way through the thick mess.
16. I found it hard to drink fast while out of breath. The air had started to cool by now however. Getting ahead while I swallowed were Marek, Peter Gagarin, Ted Good, Spike and some others.
17. I closed ground on those ahead using the trail. Peter got to #14 first but tried to fool us all by saying it was the wrong control. I checked anyway and punched.
18. Catching-up to Peter who had slowed, I just tried to judge the location by the field size. Peter was looking for the trail which I hadn't even read on the map while running. I cut in and saw it first but thick undergrowth and stickers held me up. Peter used the trail and got there ahead of me which was probably a good thing. The others were right behind.
19. Going to #16, I got a little off and started to go up the reentrant that we had to cross. Another guy was ahead doing the same. Seeing the others, I crossed and got on the trail. Marek was ahead of everyone and I set in behind him. I turned left off the trail as it dropped down but didn't see it so I came up again. Peter and Spike caught-up and got there first.
20. Going to #17, I followed Spike and Peter.
21. Going to #18 I followed Spike and Peter.
22. Going to #19 I followed Spike.
23. Going to #20 I followed Spike.
24. +00:20Going to #21 I followed Spike. We came out on the road near the Farm Trail. Turning left, then cutting right, I got ahead of Spike. Not having remembered seeing the earth wall on the map nor seeing the remant of it that was actually there, I got too far left. Lucky for me, I saw it hanging high on my right just after Spike had punched.
25. I tried to catch-up to Spike but didn't before getting to #22.
26. +00:20As I was catching-up to Spike left of the fencing, I could see Ted going the other way around the fencing. Spike complimented me for catching-up to him while drinking beer and I didn't look at the map again as I should have before passing him. In my mind, it was at the tip of the triangle of trees so I past the trail. Realizing my error at the tip, I came back on the west side and punched just before Ted got there.
27. +00:05Taking off in a hurry, I started down the wrong mowed path but corrected to get to #24. Spike was long gone.
28. Using the road, I got there behind Spike but ahead of Ted.
F. Gulping without air I weezed it down. I'm not sure who was recording the finishes but it didn't matter. I had fun and the party afterward was even better.
