1. | +01:30 | I figured we'd go south to start-off so I aligned my map that way before starting (upside down and standing on the north side of the map facing south). This did me no good at all as I got confused and almost did a 180. Peggy who was starting minutes behind told me to look at my map again. I corrected, already 50 seconds into the race and tried to go straight but got drawn too far down the hill. Upon seeing the road down below, I turned left and back up. I got there just as Peggy did however she was running Green and was at the wrong control.
2. | Knowing our control to be the same (her #1, and my #2), Peggy went on the right side of the rock and I went left, scrambing up to the control. I got there first.
3. | I stayed high but got too far to the right. I curled around in a J to the left to get there.
4. | I went straight to the trail junction, then ran on bearing to spike it.
5. | Just running loosely into the reentrant, then down, I soon saw it.
6. | +00:30 | I planned to take the road but didn't read the map correctly or perhaps set a bad bearing. Instead, I hit the trail which took me to the road then ran in on bearing.
7. | +05:00 | A short hop across the road to the knoll, I was surprised not to see the control when I got there. It was hidden deep in some rocks and I must have just past it. I went on a little, checking the Blue control even though I was fairly sure it was incorrect. Looping back, I circled about, saw others come through and look equally dumbfounded. Finally, I ran back to the road, relocated at the stone wall and ran on bearing almost right to it.
8. | +02:00 | I planned to go straight then use trails. I got off-course and confused the trails. Relocating at the trail junction due south of #8, I again tried to run on memory instead of just looking at the map. I ran to the right side of the knoll and had to J-hook back to the left around to it.
9. | Straight but hesitant.
10. | Just ran straight, keeping a careful eye on the compass. I enjoyed to open area and downhill, despite the rocky ground.
11. | +01:00 | Going straight, I got too far right. I didn't check the control description. Upon seeing a control on a root stock, I went more right and down the hill. Getting there and realizing it was incorrect, at least I relocated on the map using the rootstock and could head back up.
12. | Not going in a straight line, I contoured to the trail, then turned left down the hill to the bend. Cutting over, I then hit the next trail below and followed it right to the junction. Going on bearing down and across the marsh, I came out at trail bend west of the control.
13. | I just headed to the trail, then right and downward. Because of the circle on the map, I didn't see the trail that I was on until afterward--it look wrong to me so I ran cautiosly. I caught another runner. Upon seeing the parking lot, he went straight down to it while I went left and followed trails there w/o trouble.
F. | +00:01 | I had trouble putting the Sport Ident in the hole, but ran hard. At least I was +20 minutes faster than last year's Short O' in Cincinnati. |
