Race Evaluation

WCOC Macedonia: Red

ParkSchool

1. Stayed L of river and found good routes between barberry. Given my relative rates on and off trails, I think this was my best route choice.
2. Dropped down a bit to take advantage of clearer terrain and avoid sidehill. Passed Rick DeWitt who stayed high.
3. On compass, winding up a bit right, but saw flag from a distance to help correct.
4. On line. Very encouraged to see Phil Bricker and Susie DeWitt punching just in front of me.
5. Angled up hill passing Susie and found the wall, then straight in. Phil still in sight.
6. Stayed high following streamers through barberry. Was not sure if this was linear feature on map, which I could not clearly identify, but seemed like only logical approach. Phil ahead before losing streamer path (perhaps intentionally). I followed streamers to field then dropped down along barbed wire until convenient crossing point.
7. +04:30Planned to run road, but went way too far SE and up trying to find better running. Crossed half of field before hitting road, then compounded error by losing place on road and leaving one stone wall too early. Saw Susie coming alnog direct route, but wasn't sure if she had already punched. Went W enough to read stone walls and confirm mistake.
8. On line running last 50 m on road. Caught Susie at flag and had some water. Susie nicely checked to see if I was aware of mismarked control ahead.
9. Followed trail and then wall.
10. +03:00On line passing large boulder S of trail, but then insecure due to unexpected marshy ground and unmapped boulder to E. Susie also confused. Eventually, I was able to read walls on hillside to E and confirm that I was short.
11. On line counting off boulders and preceding cliff.
12. Trudge up hill, missing a little to R, but catching myself on boulder in front of charcoal pit.
13. +00:45Inexplicably on line, rather than heading to trail, but still hit right at trail intersection with flag from other course. Somehow managed to drift R despite presence of stone walls. Had to relocate on large boulder to E of flag. Control seemed a little low on this approach.
14. On line, this time successfully.
15. +00:30Again failed to use end of wall as catching feature and drifted R. Trudged up hill trying to angle to E. Noted charcoal pit to N of flag and able to follow compass from there, although still climbed a bit high before I saw flag to my L.
16. +00:45Contoured around noting spur heading SSE, but then got sucked down by flag at trail intersection. On compass from there. Noted Charlie DeWeese coming in quickly behind me.
17. Out to trail, then down as quickly as I dared. Was hoping to drop Charlie, but he actually made up time and passed me when I hesitated at earlier control. Saw flag perhaps a split second before Charlie, but unable to beat him despite leaving trail a bit before him.
F. Tried my best to catch Charlie up the hill, but he had better wheels (and better balance at end, as I did a bellyflop into pavillion at end).
