Race Evaluation

Western States + Intercollegiate Championships: Green 1

Charlie

1. Across the reentrant and up the nose. As I got closer I saw someone coming up from the left, which might have been better.
2. +03:00Left of the first reentrant and down the second one. Not sure of what I was looking for. Clue said bend in earthbank, but I wasn't sure if it was down in the ditch or a bank up on one of the sides. Hit a little left and then hunted further left. Came back and still not down far enough, checking the sides.
3. Pretty straight, down and up through reentrant and around top of woods. Some folks went around the big reentrant to the right.
4. Down and up again. Approached from higher up in the reentrant and it was much further down than I had expected.
5. Bad map reading
Confused parallel features
Lacked concentration

Up the spur directly to the SW and learned that the dashed green meant catclaw. Yuck! Then up to the trail, a couple of steps right and down the spur, planning to cross at the big reentrant junction. Crossed a little high and lost focus, climbing the spur to the N instead of the one that goes up NW. What a drag! Followed it up until I was high enough to see the water tank by the trail, then corrected and went straight the rest of the way, finally seeing the flag from about 40 m to the right.
6. Thought about staying in the yellow to avoid the uneven ground, but the uneven ground was certainly not bad, and no climb. Saw Guy Olsen on his way to 5. Big unmapped earthbank 100 m or so before control. Could see the knoll and the saddle from a long way out.
7. Generally pretty straight and slightly left of line. Spur before control was lower than I thought it would be, and I was left a bit, so left of the knoll and then angling down to end up below the lone tree.
8. On compass and keeping wooded area to my right. Saw Lynn and Anna Urbanova at the control
9. Running generally with Lyn, although she didn't stop at this control.
10. Lyn went left a bit, but I headed down the reentrant and under the spur to the trail, taking a pretty straight line from the trail junction and through the Day 2 control 1 saddle (although I obviously didn't realize it at the time). Up from the bottom, and Lyn arrived at the same time from the top.
11. Across the broad reentrant and aiming slightly right down the spur for the trail bend at the fence. Made for a nice crossing stile. Lyn was further right so I got ahead, but she blew by on the trail. Got ahead again when she stopped to read the map near the control
F. Fairly straight, avoiding the temptation to go down to the wash.
