Race Evaluation

Mt Tom: Red

ParkSchool

1. Through parking lot and up reentrant. Lack of conditioning already obvious.
2. On traverse through green, arriving a little high, but able to identify prominent spur to SW of control to guide me to flag.
3. More traverse, although again wound up a little higher than planned. Up reentrant to saddle and down passing large boulder on L.
4. Contoured some more below rocky features.
5. Trudged up large rocky reentrant before veering off to saddle SE of flag.
6. Roughly on line, although in retrospect, I may have been better advised to drop down immediately to avoid some of the side hill. Nevertheless, able to recognize cliffs after 2nd reentrant and pass to S to lead me through saddle E of flag.
7. A bit intimidated by leg, at least in part because I failed to appreciate that leg crossed path which provided a solid feature on which to reorient if necessary. Picked way more carefully and higher than now seems optimal identifying prominent spur w/ two cliff faces N of line just short of halfway, then crossing path near clustered dot knolls. From there, tried to aim for cliff faces E of control, but wound up a bit low. Still able to make out position of southern cliff to help direct me into flag.
8. Strong leg almost exactly on line to road, then up other side when I could identify cliff face adjacent to road to the W. Passed through small saddle before heading up reentrant pointing towards flag.
9. Stayed above cliffs before dropping to cross broad reentrant. Able to identify cliff SE of control as I headed up. Lost some time here, although reasons are unclear, as I nailed flag. Perhaps I zig-zagged more than I appreciated crossing reentrant, or maybe I am just that out of shape.
10. Along ridge line, then S to 2nd trail. Left when trail bent W, then contoured roughly picking up form reentrant passing below cliff, then crossed broad reentrant to climb spur and run along the top. It felt like flag was a little further SW than I anticipated.
11. Opted for safety here as I headed all the way down along SW side of stream until I identified cliff face. Route was effective, although not as fast as more direct route, particularly as running more treacherous than anticipated above stream.
12. Dropped down a little more quickly resulting in some needless up and down. Flag visible even before I neared trail. I even hesitated a bit before I realized the trail was in front of me as well.
13. On line counting reentrants.
14. On line, picking up trail at bend. Momentarily confused when I hit small road mapped like other trails, but quickly figured out that I was where I had planned to be, then crossed field to flag.
F. To trail before cutting off corner near parking lot. A very satisfying run as I nailed every control for first time in my career, although obviously still some room for improvement in both route selection and conditioning. Prolific AP split recording for local event a tribute to both Phil's coursesetting and the use of e-punching. Bravo for both.
