Boulder Dash 2007: Green X Day 1

tonyf

1. what an embarassing day. Can't remember the last time I had so much trouble - many years ago. Only my fourth day of O this year and first new map in a year. Prerunning starting at 9:00. Aims Coney started a few minutes after (?) me. Trail to first control.
2. +06:00Then it all fell apart. Confused by the vertical green and low visibility and lost map contact and even direction. should have recognized I was going through mapped green stuff north of control but didn't. Thought I was off right so veered farther north getting slower as I went farther. Finally recovered I think onb knoll almost to #3 and went carefully back SW over knolls to control.
3. Past tip of marsh. OK Passed Aims for first time.
4. Along S edge of marsh and over hill.
5. +09:00Even more problem. Never got to stream and marsh apparently veering right and wandering. Ffinally relocated at double trail east of water stop then went northwest OK unnecesarily climbing knoll SE of control.
6. Over hill and dale to the major trail bend then reached trail/stream well east of control. Trail went through skinny gap between boulders in the group - good attack point. Must have been much hesitation of this leg but passed Aims for second time.
7. +01:00Started NW as if going from 7 to 8 but recovered in 100 m. No problem.
8. +14:00Headed NW for trail and turned left on reaching it. Ran uphill a bit, but not to the X junction (I thought) before heading north below the ridge crest. Aims followed me in. In the control location (supposedly) we both milled around trying to make things fit, which they sort of did. I went back SW to the hill top and then to the trail beyond. Decided I had to go to the trail X again, saw it and turned around but realized this trial was NOT going over the knoll tops. Better check the junction more carefully. Wooops. It's a T, not an X. Where the H am I. Finally decided I must be at the T way SW of control and got this confirmed by David Yee. What's a little cheating when your supposed to be pre-running.) Aims and I were both two blocks off from where we should have been. Seriously considered a DNF - I'm supposed to be on duty as the Safety Officer.
9. Via trail then carefully thorugh all the rock.
10. Along stream from water - cautiously.
11. Straight to ride.
12. +01:00Ride and then ridge. Misread the veg boundaries as a big boulder field (all the dots merge on the run), which never materialized. But got to final knoll/clearing and looked over edge seeing nothing. So downhill to next cliff line - nothing. Finally went back up to first cliff checked from above and there it was.
13. +01:00In the gravel pit I went over the hill west of the trees and got seriouslyt hung up in briars that were so thorny I couldn't grab the stem to pull them off. Lost a minute standing there enmeshed.
