Boulder Dash 2007: Red Day 2

TimGood

1. +07:00Very slow on the uphill and drifted W. I was having compass problems much of the day. Every time I checked my direction, it seemed the compass pointed a new direction. Keep correcting to the left but still never hit the trail. Assumed I had crossed it somehow and not seen it so keep on. Eventually hit the marshes west of the trail and relocated on the big boulder. Still a long way off and had to go thru a lot of rocks to get to the control.
2. +03:00S to trail angling right a bit so I would be right of the water stop. Unfortunately I hit the first trail which I had not noticed at all, turned left and looked for the water which I could not find. After some fumbling, realized i was on the wrong trail and cut over from the bend, and in from left of the water. Still had some trouble finding the control. Seemed more E than I expected.
3. Straight along the edge of the hill then up to the control.
4. Straight again, passing yesterdays water control on the way.
5. Straight.
6. +15:00Started E toward 6 but with my early troubles, decided to take the safe trail around and cut in by 7 and dogleg 6. NW to trail then around and cut in at the marsh tip N of 7. 10 minutes to get there. Did not see 7 but did not look for it either. More direction problems and again drifted well W of where I should have been. Lots of people in the woods, most looking a bit lost as was I. Found a pit with a control but could not tell where it was. Tried several times to relocate on the marshes but since all were dry had trouble telling their size and shape and must have done it wrong. Was getting ready to bail E to the trail when I realized the dry marsh I was in might be the pond N of the control. It was and I found the control. My safe trail route had not worked out very well.
7. +06:00Not feeling very confident so slow and tried to keep track of where I was. Failed again. Wanted the marsh on the L so went to far right and around the wrong marsh. Came out at the trail no where near 7.
8. Nice trail run but I to tired to go very fast. Phil Bricker passed me on the trail and went up the trail W of the control. I went in at the clearing to take the trail on the E side of the control. Clearing much bigger than expected and I started up the trail but did not get very far before realizing it was the wrong one. Cut over to the correct on. Someone blew by, and later Mark Dominie caught me.
9. +07:00Last of the big errors. With Mark leaving the control and drifted way W again. Hit the trail South of the T intersection and thought I on the trail SW of the control. Cut in, hit some rocks so headed NE, only to hit the trail again. Thought I had curved right and was on the trail on E side of control but was actually on trail on W side of control. Saw the water off to the W, figured out where I was and cut up the control. Saw Samantha leaving it.
10. Down to trail and attacked from below.
11. Back out to trail, thru the clearing and then ran along the edge of the high ground. Started looking when I crossed the small marsh and saw the boulder from a ways off.
12. Straight out to power line and crossed the water on the bridge. Took the trail to the water and straight in from there.
13. Straight. Caught my foot on a stick and almost cramped so slower than I should have been.
14. Straight.
15. Stayed high, upper trail, then crashed thru at the bend. Looked like a lot of light green on the left route so took the right trail and stayed on as long as possible. Attacked from the W tip of the marsh.
16. Straight.
F. I have had better runs. Big problems relocating after an error and tired and slow on the legs that were clean. On a positive note, even with a time close to 2 hours I managed to beat 3 people by less than a minute.
