Boulder Dash 2007: Green X Day 1

Charlie

1. +01:30Looked so easy. Trail from start, then E down hill to lower trail to corner of marsh, but went to wrong hill, then wandered around a bit to the right before coming back and finding it.
2. +06:00Slightly right of line, crossing streambed, spur and larger reentrant. Compass line from boulder in reentrant and reading knolls, but no control when I get to the reentrant. Mill around a bit and find the deep depression that is mapped as a marsh, but since it looks more like a deep depression, I am just confused and mill around some more. Finally find the stone wall and go back from the junction.
3. Keeping stonewall on the left, and down the spur through the green. Pretty sure I was coming to the right knoll, but got a little antsy when I saw two knolls off to my right (instead of just one as mapped). Anyway, it was ok.
4. +02:30Down to the marsh and through. Heard crashing behind which I later learned was Steve Tarry. Over the large hill at E end of marsh and down the spur, but no knoll and no rock. Drifted off a bit to the marsh on the right, and then back through the nasty laurel thicket to the bag. Hard to say what the feature was the bag was on.
5. Now I'm feeling pretty panicky, so N to the cross trail and then stream to the triangular marsh. Through the marsh to N corner and up the reentrant. Hills didn't look quite right, so went up the one to the east first (since it was lower), just to make sure. Flag was on the higher one, as I had expected.
6. Pretty straight, aiming for the largish marsh halfway there. Got sucked into a marsh right before going N, and then figured it out and just climbed the hill NE of the big marsh, to the trail and across to the next trail, hitting it near all the rocks. Left on trail for a bit, then in on compass. Rocks on the controll knoll were bigger than I expected.
7. +18:00Attempting to go on compass, but drifting badly. Went past red control on small reentrant, and then a day 2 control. Found marsh N of control, but going south didn't get me anywhere, and I ended up 200m NW of control at double boulders, but couldn't find the trail behind them, so not sure where I was. Decided I had to be at the double boulders because there was nothing else around that looked like that and headed south for the big marsh. Couldn't find it, and eventually ended up back at the day 2 control. Again back on compass, and got to the double boulders again. Finally talked with Mark D, who pointed out the direction of the big marsh. From there I could find it.
8. Had trouble following compass here, too, but eventually got W to small N/S trail and went N across larger trail over the first hill and the second, then on compass and could see the reentrant developing from above.
9. NW to trail, left on trail to smaller trail then across reentrant and climb up to the highest cliff, then down one.
10. Followed stream all the way.
11. +03:00E across marsh then fatefully decided on R of knoll and around the back. Things looked very different up there than I expected. Very different. Found a lot of weird stuff, eventually decided to look for the top of the sharp reentrant and then ok.
12. +01:00R of ridge line, eventually getting to the moss covered bare rock and to the end and the foot of the cliff and . . . no flag! Now I'm really freaking out. So I climb up and look around and go a bit further and down another cliff (which was apparently the mapped one).
13. +01:30Fairly gingerly down hill, checking my compass a lot, and eventually out to the trail and got stuck searching the wrong copse. I really couldn't see this stuff. Way too many veg boundaries for me.
F. Finally a leg I could execute.
