Race Evaluation

NEOC: Harold Parker State Forest: Red

PBricker

1. +00:15Trail to the right. Slow start since I knew it would be a long outing. Missed a trail junction, but corrected quickly.
2. Straight, reading map well.
3. Was going to go to the road, which might have been a bit faster. But after heading east a ways on the trail, the road no longer made much sense. Worked out OK, came in slightly left of the flag.
4. Feet in up to the ankles crossing the green marsh. Otherwise fine.
5. No good trail options, so just headed south. Very slow going through the thick veg. Crossed the main trail, and attacked from the pond, drifted a bit right, but seeing the stone wall straightened me back out.
6. Caught an unmapped trail mostly heading the right way. Made this a fast leg.
7. +02:00Trails, no cutting any corners. Missed this a bit to the left and circled up to the knoll to relocate.
8. +01:30Poor route down to the trail which required an unnecessary stream crossing, briefly turned the wrong way on the trail, then a bit off line and unsure where I was heading through the (nice!) technical area towards the control. Fortunately, recognized some features as I was getting close and corrected nicely.
9. Straight, but got a bit to close to the marsh and slowed by thick veg.
10. Trails, bouncing off the road because I missed the little trail, but probably just as fast.
11. Road.
12. No problem, but really slowing down by now. Hamstrings felt very vulnerable.
13. +01:00Went a bit too far on the road because the stone wall kept going beyond where mapped. No problem coming back for it.
14. +00:30Cross road, down hill and saw a group including Dave Y. off to my left looking for something. Clue said 3m. boulder, so I wondered why I wasn't seeing it, but I went a few more steps and so a 1m. boulder which was 3m on the other side.
15. +01:00Missed the junction with the trail that goes by the control (was it there?), came back a bit and just headed into the woods, eventually coming across a twisty trail heading in the right direction.
16. +01:00Bad fall on the trail leaving 15, went splat in mud puddle and banged my left upper thigh on a rock. Very slow limping along after that. Brief confusion when I crossed a stream thinking it was the N-S stream when it was an E-W stream before the N-S stream. Really crappy veg on this leg.
17. Out to the road. No problem, but very slow with my leg hurting.
F. Parking lot!
