Race Evaluation

Gauteng Orienteering Champs: Short: M21A

1. Had a nice 1st control. Recognised the feature from the path already.
2. Back to the path asap as did not know terrain as yet. Attack point was the bench, leading me straight down the re-entrant into the boulder field.
3. +00:10Battled to get away from the control in the thorn bushes. Then okay, following the lower path into the control.
4. Followed path much of the way. Decided not to follow edge of marsh, which I think was good decision, but rather attack from above. Was suprised though in that control was lower than I expected.
5. Straight up the hill to the path then cut in early for thicket. No problems.
6. Contour in to boulder. Spot on... only saw the boulder at 2m away!
7. Across the semi open terrain into the re-entrant.
8. Straight down onto the path, then across, using the last clearing as my attack point.
9. Got onto the other path, then chose right around the thicket to hit the indistinct path early and to the right. Good choice, Richard battled going left.
10. +00:30Saw Garry as I punched, but he disappeared on this long running leg. Followed paths to dam crossing, then along the path on N side of river until a break of white beside the path where I darted up the hill. Stopped short at wrong control which was on similar rocky ridge just short of my control. This was hidden by connection line.
11. +00:05Left of straight line. Slow into the control after I saw the path bend... used as my attack point. Came left around the thicket when I should have gone right.
12. Straight line. Never even saw the path to the left, but I think that would have been slower. Caught Garry on this leg.
13. Down the path and the fire break, across the dam wall and straight in.
14. Left of straight. Strange as I was on a rough compass bearing. Garry was going more right, so corrected my course.
15. Straight line between thickets and into clearing.
16. +01:00Only big mistake of course. Crossed road and went between thickets, when i though I was going right of the righthand one. Was then too far to the left. Stopped when I got in line with the fence whilst Garry continued. Then doubled back to control, which was also slightly out of place (too close to other thicket).
17. Left of thicket and straight in.
F. +00:05Flat out sprint, but maybe could have gone straight line instead of along path.
