Race Evaluation

BOK/US Team Umstead 007: Saturday: F21 WRE Red

Cristina

1. Started cautiously but even so immediately found that I was going a bit right as I tried to avoid the thicker veg right by the start. Heard the whistle for the next start (1 minute) and realized that I was moving really slowly. At least I didn't screw it up.
2. Trying not to move too fast, but I don't remember paying much attention to details through here other than "across the top of the reentrant and over the small spur, trying to keep a straight line. It worked, and I saw Viktoria leaving the control just before I arrived.
3. +04:00Yeah. Tried to go right to avoid all the green but it seemed slow everywhere so I turned back to (more or less) the right direction to hit the main road near the dirt road. I popped out about halfway between the dirt road and the trail to the right of the line but somehow thought that I was left of the line. Turned right. Saw the trail and though "hm, that doesn't look quite right" but took it anyway and turned off at the power line thinking, "hm, that came quick". Eventually, after wandering around and cursing in the reentrant just next to the powerline I realized what I had done and reattacked again. Sarah and Angelica were there a few seconds ahead.
4. Frustrated by my error I burned out of 3 and hit the road, left to the houses and then aimed right down the spur for a left attack into the control. Made up some time. Felt really good about my awareness and thought process on the run on this leg. I was moving fast and paying full attention and not letting myself run away from my ability to read the map. Of course, I didn't need to go all the way over to the road based on how I attacked, but the execution was solid.
5. Went up the middle of the spur towards the top of the hill, thus aiming right to the trail. Left on the trail and then down the reentrant. Worked pretty well. Feeling pretty good.
6. Went straight over the ditch and up the spur. Short leg so the straight with contact approach worked except I didn't feel 100% sure of what I was doing, just mostly sure. Even though it's a short leg I could/should have paid more attention.
7. Aimed right over the ridge to the main reentrant and then right up to the control. Felt in control here. Bag right where I expected it.
8. I had a sort of weird approach, but it worked. Aimed right to use the left-most house as an attackpoint, but then aimed let down the spur for a turn back to the right to hit the control. Staying right would have made more sense. But I still saw the bag where I expected it.
9. Slogged up the hill, I think using the mapped trail, then crossed the reentrant so I was high/left on the other side, for a right attack into the control. Not feeling as in control here, there were a few other runners around going for the same bag so I think I let my guard down a little. ("If I don't see it right away someone else will.")
10. There was a little train here and everyone just went straight but seemingly with no plan to actually locate the control. I was behind and knew that we were left of the line and popped over to the right.
11. Took the trail from the top of the hill down to the intersection, then cut across the stream to the next trail and used the rock pile/cairn as an attackpoint. Unfortunately, hesitated with the trails and from the rock pile. No problem actually getting to it, but I didn't need those pauses.
12. Aimed left and spotted the control coming down the first spur. Over to the right and straight up.
13. Drifted a bit right into the big open area, but then just jumped off the corner, aiming left looking for the streamers. Slow going through the junky stuff.
F. Weird finish chute. Pushed it! Felt decent about the run overall, except the stupidity at number 3.
