Race Evaluation

Georgia Navigator Cup, Day 1: red

Cristina

1. Took a few seconds to really look at the map before taking off. I had anticipated a longish first leg, so this wasn't a surprise. Mostly went straight since I didn't feel confident that going around was going to be faster. And straight was pretty hard to screw up. Sort of slow and deliberate, but didn't screw anything up.
2. Already wondering how many hills there were going to be. Basically straight, not even much of a contouring attempt across the reentrant.
3. +00:15One of the legs I'd "studied" - tried to contour, hit the trail in the reentrant and take that over, using the trail curve as an attackpoint. I paused to consider the route before I headed up, but it worked well once I got going.
4. +00:15Okay, so far so good, feeling level-headed. Up to the top of the ridge and then down the left side of the reentrant, away from the green. Drifted left from the small ap reentrant but quickly corrected.
5. +00:45Up and over, but didn't realize how far I drifted right and got pulled away by the obviously not-mine control on the rocks. Pretty obvious where I was, though, easy to correct.
6. +00:15Shook off the little goof and had the plan all set for the next one, only I got ahead of myself temporarily, thinking I was already in the big streambed. Decided to go up and over once I realized that the bottom didn't look very fast or fun to run in. Over the top was pretty failsafe.
7. More climb. Yesss.
8. My plan was basically to contour around, tick off reentrant and nail it. It basically worked, seeing the rock face before helped. Maybe going a little higher would have been faster? Hard to say.
9. Up to the trail and confused for a few seconds because there was a rootstock right in front of me - hadn't seen it on the map.
10. Took the trail up to gain some height over the control and all the small reentrants. Basically bee-lined it from there, though with that big line feature of a reentrant it was hard to screw up... guess I was lucky.
11. Yep, up again. And again, hard to miss. Feeling pretty good about the run so far.
12. Finally a chance to rin on a road or trail! All the way to almost the start, then contoured around the hill to the bag. Sweet. Going well.
13. The other leg I had "mentally practiced". Dropped down a bit and contoured over to the old road, then up the reentrant at the end of the earth bank. No problemo.
14. +09:00Then I shut off my brain. Just ran in the general direction of the control. Hit the well with the fence around it, only my map just had the well, no fence. I'd remember there being a fence around it on the older version of the map, so I figured I was actually there and not off the map. Should have been brainless to get to the control from there, but I sighted the hill to the right and sort of drifted over there. Confused, ran up and down, checked that it all matched against the creek, ran up again, nothing matched, finally ran around to the next reentrant. Geez. Bad mistake and then poor recovery.
15. +01:15Still not recovered mentally - drifted to the reentrant left, but thought I must have drifted right and so went left. Another control there, so after swearing a couple of times I ran back in the right direction.
16. Ran straight down then through the woods. Pretty pissed about those last two, so I wasn't thinking much - trail almost certainly wouuld have been faster.
F. Didn't have much kick left - a new phenomenon.
