Race Evaluation

QOC Hemlock Overlook: Brown

Nadim

1. Down the reentrant. I ran into some downfall which slowed me down.
2. Time Lost: 00:40I was hesitant about how to cross the large reentrant but finally got to the trail and climbed out along a side reentrant which took me to a trail. I went straightish from a trail bend but adjusted to try to stay on the ridge top rather than incurr more climb. I got a bit past the control to the left--wrong spur. I realized this quickly but the damage was done.
3. Time Lost: 00:30I set a bad compass bearing leaving #2. About half-way down I realized it and made a sharp correction to the right. It seemed that the control was higher up the reentrant than I expected it to be.
4. Straight over but I was a bit more right. This would support my thought that #3 was too high up the reentrant (the map should have showed the ditch continuing higher up at #3).
5. Time Lost: 01:30I tried to run straight. At one point I got onto the trail but left it at the bend. I stopped before the stream, being too low. I wandered a bit until I found the clearing, then had to run around the thicket to the control.
6. Time Lost: 00:20I got into the main reentrant but had trouble seeing the side reentrants on my right. I should have keyed off the stream which was shown on the map, rather than just the reentrants. Things came up fast becase I was running well. I started climbing the spur just past the stream, felt it was't right, then stayed along the edge until I could see the side reentrant that matched. Without losing too much climb I crossed the stream and huffed up to the control. At first I thought it had fallen off but it was just hanging very low.
7. I thought it'd be best to get to the trail but the way was too steep to run across the deadfall which was in the way. I hugged the reentrant to the top, then ran to the edge of the field to minimize climb. It was over the little ridge from there.
8. I dog-legged back to the edge of the private field. Running along the edge of it, I started to go straight but realized this would give me an extra reentrant to climb. I cut right to round it, then ran to the edge of the green. Dropping down from there, I cut left when it ended and went straight to the control. I realized it was an old map but didn't expect to just see a dot knoll when the feature was a rootstock.
9. I thought to go through the reentrant but figured that would be slow. I climbed steeply to the ridge walking most of it, then ran along the trail to the reentrant on the left side. From there I attacked straight to spike it. Some people were just leaving.
10. I started out along the right side of the reentrant, half thinking to cross it. I figured it be faster to go around it and just as I climbe past the top, I hit the clearing and realized it'd be fastest to use the road into the finish.
