Race Evaluation

BATONA 500: Sprint B

Nadim

1. No warm-up. Calmly running to the field edge and in. Michael Warlters started a minute ahead of me and Patrick Shannon started a minute behind me.
2. I hesitated at the road crossing having not consciously registered it in my route.
3. Straight and along the right just a bit for better running.
4. +00:35Once again, I hesitated as I went straight and encountered a trail which I hadn't conciously registered as being there. Moving on, I got to a clearing and could see some thorny mess ahead. Lynn Walker was already picking her way through when after a second hesitation, I did too.
5. I ran straight and was surprised at how fast Lynn Walker was running. She was off a bit to the right. I saw the ditch and followed it to the control.
6. Going back the way I came, As I approach #6 I can see Michael Warlters in the field going to #7. I even saw #7. I was surprised to notice that Patrick Shannon was pretty close behind me. I picked the right bush and got to the control, probably tipping it off for Patrick.
7. Straight. I'd seen it on the way to #6.
8. I tried to pick-up the pace to put some distance between me and Patrick Shannon. For a little while, I could see Michael Warlters ahead but at the end, I followed the vegetation in myself, coming from the left side.
9. I left the control going to the left a bit (west?). I soon got to the trail and cut left on it until the end of the light green. I then ran along the light green to the control.
10. +00:30My first thought was that I'd openened up a gap on Patrick and should get out fast to break contact. I ran fairly straight over the little ridge but got a bit to the right. As I approached. Lisa Carr was just getting there too. Had I not focused so much on getting out fast, I could have see the trail option to the left and gotten there quicker.
11. +00:08As I left #10, I noticed Patrick bashing through the leaves getting to #10. I ran straight and saw a control far ahead. It drew me off a bit. It was #2. Realizing this before making a bigger error. I cut right and got to the control. Patrick did the same thing.
12. I was looking for some faster route, then just decided to go straight. I drifted left, not realizing that the Go control was the same as the A-meet race earlier. I corrected and had to hustle to stay ahead of Patrick.
F. +00:02I tried to get a sprint going but my stomach muscles hurt from the run earlier. Another runner was ahead and I passed him. However, Patrick got up a head of steam and passed me. At the punch, he fumbled for 2 seconds backing all three of us up. It turned out that I'd run the run-in 4 seconds faster after doing 6.3K. It would have been enough for two places. Overall, I was happy with the result. I hadn't expected to do well as sprints can be so volatile.
